Founded in 1919, Football Club de Metz discovered professional status at the beginning of the 1932-33 season, participating in the first French professional football championship. Although the club has oscillated between the first and second divisions since the 2000s, it is nevertheless one of the most regular at the highest level, as evidenced by its 35 consecutive seasons in the elite between 1967 and 2002. The club have won two French Cup in 1984 and 1988, as well as 1 League Cup in 1996 against Olympique Lyonnais. After an exceptional 2018/19 season, the team have validated their rise to Ligue 1 Uber Eats, only one year after having left it. For their return within the top league, the club finished 15th in the ranking, above Dijon and Saint-Etienne.

The team has been coached since June 2022 by Laszlo Boloni, after having coached teams like Stade Rennais, AS Monaco and RC Lens.

Consecutive to the 2023/24 season ended at the 16th position, above Lorient and Clermont, Metz has been relegated to League 2 BKT after having lost against ASSE in the playoffs.

FC Metz won the French Cup in 1988, beating FC Sochaux-Montbéliard in the final after extra time.

The Parisians against Metz

Throughout their history, Paris Saint-Germain and Football Club de Metz have played each other on many occasions. The last victory of the Grenats in the capital dates back to the 1995-96 season.

On September 16, 2020, the Red and Blue won their first victory of the season against FC Metz. Despite the expulsion of Diallo and Bernat's injury, the Parisians won at the very end of the game thanks to Draxler, and after a very good job by Di Maria. In the second leg in Moselle, on April 24, 2021, the Parisians went victorious 3 - 1, with two goals from Kylian Mbappé and a penalty from Mauro Icardi.

The Parisians were travelling to Moselle on September 22, on the 2021-22 Ligue 1 Uber Eats matchday 7. They succeeded for the 7th time in 7 matches, thanks to a goal from Hakimi in the extra time.

May 21, 2022, the last day of the French championship 2021/22, will remain a memorable day in the history of Paris Saint-Germain. The Parisian fans will remember for a long time this closing night of the season as much for the show proposed on the field as for the festivities around the match. In addition to the beautiful 5-0 victory against Metz, Kylian Mbappé announced to the Parisian people that he was prolonging the adventure with his club of heart. The opportunity for him to celebrate his extension with a hat-trick that allowed him to finish top scorer of Ligue 1 Uber Eats for the 4th consecutive season.

This match was also the last one for Angel Di Maria, the best passer of the history of the club (112), who said goodbye to the Parisian public by scoring the last goal of the match. The player, who played for Real Madrid and Manchester United, was very moved and received a heartfelt tribute from the Parc des Princes.

After the game, it was time to celebrate the 10th title of PSG. An additional title making Paris Saint-Germain the most titled club in Ligue 1 Uber Eats, equal with ASSE and ahead of Olympique de Marseille (9). During this very special evening, Andrei Shevchenko, European soccer legend, was accompanied by Bernard Lama and Dominique Rocheteau to present the Hexagon to the Parisian players.

The two teams met again on the 17th and final day of the first leg of the 2023/24 championship. Despite dominating the first half with over 80% of the possession, the Parisians had to wait until the second half for a Vitinha goal to take the lead. Kylian Mbappé then gave himself a birthday present with a brace, taking his tally for 2023 to 42 goals scored. Another highlight of the match was the professional debut of Ethan Mbappé, the Parisian goleador's younger brother, who played the final minutes of the game.

FC Metz have not beaten Paris Saint-Germain since the 2005-06 season of Ligue 1 Uber Eats.

Kylian Mbappe made his debut for AS Bondy in Seine-Saint-Denis, a club that also produced players such as Sebastien Corchia and Jonathan Ikone. In 2015, he signed his first professional contract with AS Monaco, before joining Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2017. On September 8th, 2017, in his first match with the Parisian jersey, the striker scored his first goal against FC Metz. But Kylian Mbappé also enjoyed a meteoric rise with Les Bleus, with whom he won the 2018 World Cup, coached by Didier Deschamps. Named Best Young Player of the tournament, he became at 17 the second youngest goalscorer in a World Cup final, behind Pele.

Born on January 1st, 1996, in Gagnoa, Ivory Coast, Habib Maïga made his debut as a professional player with AS Saint-Etienne, his training club. He scored his first goal in Ligue 1 Uber Eats on October 14th, 2017, against FC Metz. In lack of playing time with ASSE, he was loaned to FC Metz for the 2018/19 season. That year he won the League 2 BKT title with the Merlus, before the club exercised its purchase option. After having played with the youth teams of the Ivorian selection, he made his debut with the A on September 6th, 2019, against Benin.

Saint-Symphorien Stadium

Inaugurated in 1923, Saint-Symphorien Stadium is the mythical venue of Football Club of Metz since the club was founded four years earlier. After extensive renovations, the stadium in its current configuration can accommodate 24,985 spectators in the North, South Moselle, West and East stands. The record attendance dates back to December 7th, 1991, and the receipt of Olympique de Marseille.

During the 2022/23 season, FC Metz beat Bordeaux (3 - 0), Saint-Etienne (1 - 3) et Quevilly (1 - 2).

Located on the island of Saint-Symphorien on the banks of the Moselle, the stadium is accessible by car from the A31 motorway at exit number 32 "Metz - Centre". Located near the stadium, the ice rink parking is an option that can accommodate the supporters' vehicle, as well as the Republic and Maud'Huy parkings, located in downtown Metz. On match nights, it is also possible to use the MET network and its parking relay - public transport system via line A or B.
