Menards Shipping Cost

I was on the Menards website and had a big order in my cart. Including a variety of thing including lumber (twenty five 2x4's an a couple 4x4's). Menards has been my preferred Home Improvement store out of the big 3 in my area. I usually order do the in store pickup and pull my own lumber from the yard. I live with a nurse and with the Covid-19 situation I think it would be irresponsible to go into the store/yard to pickup my items.

I noticed they did not have the "ship to home" option for the lumber. So I selected the "deliver from store" option and to checkout to checkout and it is showing my shipping cost is $119. (Order before shipping was a little under $500). I live about 18 miles from the store I didn't expect it be free but $119 seemed a bit high. I haven't had a great experiemce with lowes butI put a similar order together there and it shows the shipping is $64. Does anyone know how the shipping costs works? Is it the amount of lumber(weight) or distance? Will they put the shipment inside of your garage?

Any help or suggestions are appreciated.

Update:

I put only eight 2x4's in my cart and went to check out(just to see the. Shipping price) it was the same...$119.

I ended up checking big order with over 100 pieces of lumber and a ton of other things. Shipping was Still $119. I called the store and the lady said they have been slammed with shipment so I am scheduled to get my order next Friday. They did say they will put it in the pole barn.

I compared prices and Menards lumber is a cheaper(and more variety) than Lowes and HD in my area , so that made up the difference in shipping and then some.

Thanks to everyone for the input. I will update when I receive the shipment. Hopefully the order is accurate and the lumber is decent.

Its based on miles. I once saw them badger a woman for $160 to take a new fridge 3 miles and bring her old one back. She didn't take the deal.

Size (length/height/width), any special considerations (special equipment needed: flatbed, forklift), distance, how fast you want or need it, and availability all play a part. Not only do they have someone pull it, they have to consider the cost of the driver (unless contracted), truck, and the special equipment. It can definitely add up quick. I ordered drywall in the past and they dropped it right in my garage for me--just have the area cleaned out and ready to go. I remember paying a pretty penny for 2x4s, a stack of drywall, and insulation to be delivered.

One thing to consider right now is if they are limiting deliveries or not dropping in garages due to COVID considerations. The store you order from would best answer any questions like that.

All in all, if you can go in and pick your lumber, that's your best bet and safest bet--or have a friend pick it up. From my order above, I had a half dozen warped 2x4s I had to take back and damaged drywall I didn't get to until I saw the bottom of the pile, a month or two later.

I tend to support Lowe's and Home Depot more when I can thanks to the Veteran discount they both offer. Menards does tend to have a better selection for me.

I tried lowes and they were limiting to 10 items or less because of the volume of orders. Hopefully the lumber is decent. I didn't order any drywall so I'm crossing my fingers. I bought more than I needed in case the lumber isn't great and I cant return it for a little while. Lumber prices are better and there is more selection (than the Lowes & HD in my area anyway)

Thank you for your service!

At 18 miles you should be at $79 IIRC. Then $10 per “pallet charge”.

Call the store.

This is if it is delivered from the store. Buying online like that, it will come from the warehouse wrapped and delivered so the charge is more. I agree, this "guest" should call the store and phone in the order with a delivery for cheaper

It is delivered from the store. Im guessing the Delivery cost varies in different locations?

It’s $89 dollars flat bed for 15 miles 99 for 20 miles plus handling and taxes. If it fits on a box truck $89 for 20 miles

Looks like its a little higher in this area. Put my parents house in for reference (under 15 from store) and shipping was $99.

I also agree with Menards being my favorite of the big three. The shipping is garbage though..They will not place in your garage. Had many problems with shipping damaged dry wall, rooftop delivery’s on the ground, and wrong product.

Each store has its own independent deliver contractors. So your mileage varies store to store.

Gotcha.i know my area is set between all the stores here. but it could be a metro area that changes cost of deliveries or what not I’m

I know this post is 4 years old. It seems steep to charge as much as they do for delivery. However, menards often contracts an independent company to handle deliveries. Factoring in paying the driver, fuel costs, upkeep, and the time it takes to load and unload deliveries is what decides how much it costs. If it still seems too expensive.. rent a trailer, go pick up your materials and unload it yourself, and then return the trailer. After that, you can decide if it really is that expensive. Just my 2 cents.
