James J. Docherty Chicago, Illinois Obituary

James J. Docherty

James Joseph Docherty ("Doc"), age 98, entered Eternal Life on March 21, 2020 after a brief illness in Chicago, IL. Born in Hamilton, Scotland to James and Margaret (nee McAleer) Docherty, James and his family came to the United States through Ellis Island, living first in Harrison, NJ, and later moving to the Bronx, NY. After graduating from The Manhattan High School of Aviation Trades, James served as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corps in Europe during World War ll. Following the war, he returned home to N.Y. where he then worked for Con Edison as a skilled machinist for over forty years. James and his wife Rosemary (nee Newall) lived in Queens, N.Y., and eventually settled in Ridgefield, N.J. to raise their family. He was the beloved husband of Rosemary, loving father of James (Laura) and Thomas (Sue), and dear grandfather ("Granda") of John, Michael and Mary Beth. James was also a treasured relative and friend, and an uncle to many cherished nieces and nephews, most of whom still reside in the N.Y./N.J. area. He was a parishioner as well for many years at the SMA (Society of African Missions) Catholic Church in Tenafly, N.J. James was preceded in death by his parents; his birth mother Elizabeth Cook; uncle John McAleer; aunt Mary (Frank) Lynn; sister Pat (Bill) Doran; niece Margaret Doran and her daughter, Debbie; niece Patricia Newall; nephew John Newall, and other loved ones, especially friends Pete, Sal, Andy and Gerry. As a faithful disciple of Christ, James was devoted to Our Lord. His many interests - travel, Classical music, reading, understanding "how things work" and the company of family and friends - were a reflection of his passion for Truth, Goodness, and Beauty. The family would like to thank the staff and residents of Smith Village for their many kindnesses throughout the years. Visitation will be Private for family only with Private Interment to follow at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elmwood, IL. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to https://www.goodcounselhomes.org/ in memory of James J. Docherty. Arrangements entrusted to Donnellan Funeral home 773.238.0075 or sign the guestbook at www.donnellanfuneralhome.com.
