The right-armer, who made his debut in 2008, had a blistering start to his international career, befuddling batsmen with his disguised variations. He took 26 wickets in his maiden Test series, against India, a record for a three-match debut rubber, and remains the fastest bowler to 50 ODI wickets, taking just 19 games to reach the landmark.

His effectiveness waned as players became wise to his methods, though he played a part in Sri Lanka’s World T20 title win in 2014, and in their journey to the 2011 Men’s Cricket World Cup final. Remarkably, he has taken the best and the second best figures in men’s T20I cricket, claiming twin six-fors in the space of just over a year. Only one other man has taken six wickets in an innings in the format.

Ajantha Mendis prepares to bowl one of his signature variation balls.

His final international appearance came on Boxing Day in 2015, and he ends with over 150 ODI wickets, and more than 50 wickets each in Tests and T20Is.
