Abstract
In 1610, the duke of Pomerania-Stettin appointed Philipp Hainhofer as his art agent. This chapter explains why this was such a significant development in his career and what this involved. Hainhofer was now able to mediate between courts of different confessions. He acted as a diplomat as much as an art agent. This chapter thus shows how the movement of ‘art lovers’ that focused on the exchange of rarities ranging from horses and antlers to shells or paintings had crucial political dimensions. It served to establish a connection that was charged with the notion of affective ties and friendship, but in reality functioned as a tool to pursue political interests.
