An Army private proves his horse is fit for service and wins his colonel's daughter.
One of Ronald Reagan's best remembered films was playing second fiddle to a chimpanzee in Bedtime for Bonzo (1951), but he also, in one of his first top-billings, played the sidekick to a horse! Sergeant Murphy (1938) is for the most part a load of horse manure, though Reagan does present us with some amusing moments. Unfortunately his female co-star Mary Maguire had the screen aura of vacuum and the film as a whole dragged quite badly, even with less than an hour running time. There is a reason for why it's been so obscure all these years.
So I have to admit: watching a Ronald Reagan movie was a bit of a personal quest for me. After all that history in the oval office and countless referencing to that great "Back to the Future" bit, the curiosity was there in a way. Of course there wasn't a rush but my eyes were peeled for the first one I could find. "Sergeant Murphy" it is! Joy to the world.
For a movie of this era, the premise is about what you expect. It's light-hearted, overly sweet and full of hijinks. Even with that, there are problems in the writing. Certain character choices are either counter-productive to the end goal or flat out questionable. Granted this is a movie…
WB presents another horse tale and vehicle for Ronald Reagan as just another studio contract player put in film after another.Thhis one is directed by B. Reeves Eason who directed 27 films almost all B movies like this one.
