Gods of the Arena – Spartacus

2011 Drama Action Adventure Fantasy List
73% Tomatometer 22 Reviews 94% Audience Score 100+ Ratings Torn from his homeland and separated from the woman he loves, Spartacus is forced into slavery and condemned to the bloody gladiator's arena in Rome. As he navigates the violent and brutal world he realizes that not all battles are fought in the arena, and that he must overcome treachery and temptation to survive. This retelling of the story of Spartacus is rife with blood, violence and sex, set to the sounds of jarring guitars, so it's definitely not for the younger crowd. Critics Consensus

Campier, grittier, and more gratuitous than the original, Spartacus: Gods of the Arena is perfect escapist entertainment.

Ryan McGee AV Club So while the prequel starts under less-than-ideal circumstances, there's hope that even though we know the final destination, the journey there will provide at least some truly unexpected pleasures Rated: B- Jun 10, 2020 Full Review Brian Tallerico HollywoodChicago.com The producers of "Gods of the Arena" know how to please their audience. On a production level, this is enjoyable escapism, the perfect fit for a Friday night after a long week at work. Rated: 3.5/5 Jun 10, 2020 Full Review Michael Starr New York Post Within the first five minutes, we're treated to what plays like a 14-year-old boy's ultimate video game fantasy - soft porn and slow-motion blood spatters and swords plunged into all parts of the body. Aug 22, 2017 Full Review Chris Carabott IGN Movies With even more sex and violence than we've become accustomed to, this opening act does not disappoint and Batiatus' rise to power should be every bit as exciting as his downfall. Rated: 8.5/10 Jun 11, 2020 Full Review Columbus Alive Staff Columbus Alive While my inner 14-year-old boy was more than pleased by these camptastic attributes, "Gods of the Arena" can only be viewed as the guiltiest of pleasures. Rated: 2/4 Jun 11, 2020 Full Review Dan Owen What Culture Overall, "Past Transgressions" delivered another hour of juicy and compelling entertainment; a gritty/hammy mix of politics, treachery, manipulation, violence, silliness and sex. Rasheed H Short and sweet season to establish new characters while growing others backstory in the wake of losing a key cast member. The same brutal action, the same dark themes, the same ever rolling wave of something more to come, just in a more neat tight and tidy package. Good way to pass time and without taking effort to know where it lands itself in the Spartacus timeline. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/03/23 Full Review Audience Member Entertaining prequel and backstory of this awesome series. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Excellent prequel, Batiatus is awesome and Gannicus is my favorite.....my cock rages on!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member After the conclusion of Blood and Sand I wasn't planning on watching any other seasons or the prequel. It was basically Gladiator with a lot of unclothed debauchery that satisfied some cheap thrills with some 300 style on top. I saw the ratings go from crap to certified so I figured why not. It definitely gets better, the political intrigue is devious and the character building becomes more complex, especially if you watched Blood and Sand first. Gratitude. I have committed myself to this series. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member This show was more than just violence and nudity; superb dialogue, intricate story with plenty of devious plotting and betrayal. Definitely worth watching! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Fans need not worry about the prequel being a useless add-on. It delivers plenty in terms of gratuity and explores some characters' back-stories while adding some potential avenues for future storylines.
