A slugcat that grows up in the dark because of an accident, whose eyesight is gradually replaced by hearing. It has a high adaptability to the dark, and embarks on the journey to find the same kind who were separately under the ground when it was a child.

The Darkness (ID: darkness) is a blind slugcat with enhanced hearing and a vengeance to carry out.

Senses

Darkness is blind, but has enhanced hearing that manifests as yellow grid lines that are cast onto creatures, food sources, and the surrounding geometry. This is similar to when the yellow Overseer guides Monk through Shaded Citadel. This hearing can further be enhanced by holding the ability button briefly, which widens the radius of where the yellow grid lines are cast. This allows the player to "see" where things are.

After visiting the Echo in Subterranean, Darkness gains the ability to create a high damage Spear that can kill all creatures, including Guardians. If Darkness has any left over good pips, hitting an enemy with this spear will give them one food pip.

Tips

  • Though Darkness' hearing is adequate for traversal of most places, they are particularly vulnerable to enemies that ambush them from above, such as Dropwigs and Vultures. Standing still briefly to expand Darkness' range of hearing is a valuable use of time to ensure safety.
  • Darkness' hearing functions even in areas that are typically dark, such as Filtration System and Shaded Citadel, making these areas less dangerous than is typical even without a light source.
