Offspring are spawnable NPC birds that can be summoned after building a nest. Offspring come in the form of eggs and hatchlings.

Behavior[]

As eggs, offspring stay in the center of the owner’s nest, clustered together if there’s multiple, and do not move at all unless teleported to their owner on command. The only action they can do is hatch on the owner’s command, where a crack appears on the egg followed by the hatching animation. It will become the hatchling version of your chosen bird.

As hatchlings, offspring will call at random regardless of their mode, sometimes multiple times in a period. By default, they have the ‘Follow Me’ setting on which has them stay behind the player at all times. They will walk when close enough and run when far enough. If too far from their owner, the offspring will teleport to them as soon as the owner touches the ground. With Follow Me off, the hatchling will sit where it is currently standing (in water, it will float to the surface and sit there). It will not teleport to the player over distance gaps.

Function[]

In either stage, offspring can be renamed and have their name color changed. They are linked to their owner’s nest and will despawn if their nest is deleted, regardless of how far they are. Only three offspring can be kept by a player at a time. Offspring can also be manually teleported to their owners regardless of their stage. Offspring can be fully customized in either stage with the same Character Creator function as is used for the player.

Eggs can be spawned in nests by choosing to add an offspring. The egg will spawn colored and patterned based on your current bird, including using the respective eggs of Phoenix, Cockatrice and Peryton. The egg acts as a vessel for the hatchling and does nothing until it hatches.

Hatchlings will spawn as the hatchling version of your chosen bird using the colors of their owner, or their default colors of the owner is not customized. They will either follow their owner or sit in place depending on their Follow Me setting, with its default toggle varying per bird depending on their real world behavior (altricial offspring have Follow Me off by default while precocial offspring have it on). They cannot be interacted with or interact with things around them. Their icon in the Nest menu shows the hatchling in the frame of animation it was in when Nest was opened, which is their customization t-pose when they first hatch. Hatchlings exist until the owner decides to Fledge them. Fledge will open a pop up stating that the offspring will permanently leave. If the owner chooses to fledge the offspring, a message will pop up saying the offspring has left and it will be permanently removed.

Trivia[]

  • Offspring are the first NPCs that can be spawned on command rather than always being on the map or only appearing at a certain in-game time.
  • Offspring are the second NPCs to directly be in-game birds, the first being Peryton.
  • Offspring unlike playable birds can sit in water, though only on the surface. This was either an oversight or left as a way to know the offspring has Follow Me off in water.
