British general and colonial administrator. He went to China in 1860 while serving with the Royal Engineers, and became known as ‘Chinese Gordon’ after crushing the Taiping Rebellion (1863–64). In 1884 he was sent to rescue the Egyptian garrisons in Sudan from forces led by the Mahdi (Muhammad Ahmad of Dongola, 1843–85), but was trapped at Khartoum and killed before a relieving force could reach him.
