CRITIC REVIEWS

90
AllMusic
The result is an utterly mesmerizing and magnetic album, almost unfair in how incredibly ambitious and impressively pulled off the whole thing is.
90
Paste
An eminently pleasurable album that reveals more with each spin.
83
Pitchfork
Andrew Bird's latest retains his sense of songcraft but eschews straightforward storytelling, opting instead for wordplay and imagery.
83
Coke Machine Glow

Although The Mysterious Production of Eggs lacks the gleeful variety of Swimming Hour, it is obvious that Bird has created his most cohesive statement to date.

80
Tiny Mix Tapes
An incredibly compelling collection of inventive folk-tinged melodies.
80
PopMatters
It's a densely melodic place composed of layered instruments so intricately intertwined with each other and Bird's lyrics that repeated listenings inevitably reveal a hidden but grandiose vision of what a pop record can be.
80
Sputnikmusic
For fans of Sufjan Stevens and similar quirky indie folk music, Andrew Bird is required listening. His other albums delve further into swing, jazz and lounge music, and while Eggs is his most recent effort it is probably his most accessible and most accomplished in terms of consistency and flow.
80
Uncut
Folk songs given a rarefied air by his elegant wordplay and multi-tracked chamber strings.
80
The Irish Times
His songs resonate with intelligence, quirky sensibility and rich melody.
70
Slant Magazine
It’s been said that it’s hard to write a good, simple love song, but it’s even harder to write an entire album’s worth of songs so rich with meaning that the listener is still sifting through the contents long after the disc has spun to a stop.
60
Q Magazine
Given time and a little effort, his songs begin to cast their own rewarding chamber-pop spell.

This is good but not his best for me - that title goes to ‘Break it Yourself’.

um, it's almost as good as i remember...

okay, so some deep lark lore here. i used to be a huge andrew bird fan. but my definition of fan back then was probably much different than what you're probably thinking. i used to never listen to whole albums whatsoever. i would hear a few songs recommended by spotify or by other means, and then i would select a few other songs that were by that same artist if i liked that song, and never go back again. i probably have like at least 30 streams each in ... read more

Lyrically, The Mysterious Production of Eggs stands as one of the best within 2000's Chamber Pop, alongside a nice mellow soundscape with works well with Andrew Bird's vocal which although not necessary the most standout he knows how to uses it effectively to get heavy emtional weight throughout the record to create one of his best works.

This is the album that sold me on Andrew Bird entirely. While it isn't my favorite project, it is iconic for a reason, and stands the test of time.
