Frances Stevenson

This is a photograph of the young Frances Stevenson who would later become Frances Lloyd George, Countess Lloyd-George of Dwyfor, the second wife of David Lloyd George – British Prime Minister from 1916 – 1922. Before marrying Lloyd George, she was his personal secretary. Thus, Frances Stevenson accompanied the prime minister to important events such as the Versailles Peace Conference. While at the conference, she sent letters to her family detailing the events as they unfolded. Frances' letters identify key differences of opinions between Lloyd George and other Allied Leaders on the conditioning of the treaty. Most notably, in April Frances had written of her expectation that “it will be a good peace [treaty], not one that will cause another war in 10 or 20 years' time.” Sadly, World War Two broke out almost exactly 20 years later.
