Mohammed Shami On Rishabh Pant's IPL 2024 Ban: 'Shocking, Unfair'

Mohammed Shami reacted with surprise and disapproval to the one-match ban imposed on Delhi Capitals (DC) captain Rishabh Pant during the IPL 2024 season. Pant's suspension stemmed from his team's repeated slow-over rate offences. Shami, sidelined with an injury throughout the IPL, shared his strong opinion in a recent interview.

Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami weighed in on the recent one-match ban imposed on Delhi Capitals (DC) captain Rishabh Pant during the ongoing IPL 2024 season.
Pant, who became the first captain to be banned for an over-rate offence in IPL 2024, was penalised after Delhi's third over-rate offence of the season.
But according to Shami, this was uncalled for. "Personally speaking, at this stage, suspending a captain is a big blow for the team. Many a time, we have seen matches going slow towards the end of a game. I admit that DC did maintain a slow over rate for which they were fined, but to suspend the skipper for a game is shocking."
"The match referee has given a huge jolt to DC, and it should not have happened, considering that this is the last stage of the tournament. People are talking about rules but according to me, this should not have happened," he said while speaking on YouTube.
Pant was not happy after he was handed a one-match ban, according to stand-in captain Axar Patel. Pant was forced to miss DC's game in Bengaluru on Sunday.
Shami's statement might spark debate among fans and analysts as some might agree that a one-match ban might be excessive, favouring a more nuanced approach that considers the reasons behind the slow over rate. Others maintain the importance of stricter enforcement to ensure a fair and timely flow of the game.
BCCI Statement
"Mr Rishabh Pant, Captain, Delhi Capitals has been fined and suspended for one match for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct after his team maintained a slow over-rate during Match 56 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 against Rajasthan Royals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi on May 07, 2024," the release said.
"As it was his team's third offence of the season under the IPL's Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences, Rishabh Pant was fined INR 30 Lac and suspended for one match. The rest of the members of the Playing XI, including the Impact Player, were each individually fined either INR 12 Lac or 50 per cent of their respective match fees, whichever is lesser.
"As per Article 8 of the IPL Code of Conduct, the Delhi Capitals filed an appeal challenging the ruling of the Match Referee. Following this, the appeal was referred to the BCCI Ombudsman for review. The Ombudsman conducted a virtual hearing and affirmed that the decision of the Match Referee remains final and binding."
