Steve developed an affinity for ancient construction methods and materials after spending his working life in the beautiful and historic county of Wiltshire. He has become thoroughly accomplished at working with chalk and chalk cob after gaining insight into how this material behaves.

Since chalk cob goes hand-in-hand with flint, Steve delights in bringing flint knapping skills to bear as well as brickwork and stonework, all laid and pointed by hand. By using mixed traditional lime mortars, coupled with the soft look of a hand trowelled lime render, Steve loves the result of these traditional methods and takes great satisfaction from his work.

For many years, Steve has worked alongside Historic England and the local conservation team on listed and unlisted building projects. He really understands exactly what is needed to bring a property or structure back to its full glory.

Another side of the job Steve thoroughly enjoys is meeting lovely people at his office, which are the picturesque villages nestled around this part of England. He strives for good working relationships with all of his clients by clearly communicating each part of the project. Customer satisfaction and a beautifully restored building or structure are the end goals!

Steve’s right-hand man is Marcus! Whilst it might be slightly embarrassing for Marcus to point this out, Steve knows he wouldn’t be able to do all that he can without his invaluable help.

They first met when Marcus and Grace commissioned Steve to undertake the complete renovation of their unique little cottage in Hampshire. Marcus became wholly immersed in the project and enjoyed it so much that he asked if he could work with Steve and learn his craft. Since they hit it off so well, Marcus left his very successful career as a chef, working alongside some of the great and good of the culinary world, to join Steve in building heritage. Marcus has an insatiable appetite for knowledge concerning all aspects of the work and a natural aptitude for this type of building. Marcus is a thoroughly capable, skilled, knowledgeable and loyal part of the business. Together, Marcus and Steve make an excellent team!
