  • The Hospital in question was a United States Army Hospital- 5th General Hospital- that operated until the withdrawal of VII Corps from Germany following the 1st Gulf War. During the Cold War the US Army stationed about 45,000 people in and around Stuttgart to include Ludwigsburg, most assigned to units under the command of VII Corps headquartered at Kelley Barracks in Stuttgart-Mohringen. Following the fall of the Berlin Wall the US decided to withdraw one of the 2 Corps sized units in the then West Germany. VII Corps and it's component units were deployed from Germany to Saudi Arabia and the bulk of the troops never returned with most units redeploying to the US. VII Corps HQ returned to Kelley Barracks to close up shop and stayed until 1992. With the withdrawal of most units in the greater Stuttgart area, 5th General Hospital was closed and the property returned to the German government.
  • Thank you for your comment I was born in Bad Canstatt in 1976 when both my mom and dad were in the us army and stationed in Stuttgart. I just recently found out what hospital I was born in and wanted to know more information thanks for the great information
  • I'm trying to locate a doc who was at the 5th General in 1974. His last name was Beatty. Any help in locating him is greatly appreciated. He saved my life.
  • I search Kirk John, Last Name ? - He was 2015 in Brüssel
  • I was one of the last stationed at 5th G , I was property book holder and was a big part of the closing down of the Hospital. It had I believe 3 tunnels under the hospital and the bottom two were flooded, there was a bar on premises and you could drink till content and stagger through the tunnel to the barracks at the other end, lol. This was my second tour in Germany just after the Gulf war, many good times.
  • Hi Don I remeber 5th General Hospital in 1992 as I was transferred to Heidelbelg end of 92. I have fond memories of the place and the staff there. I used to run at lunch time and the evenings through the vineyards which had a terrific view of Stuttgart. I was at 5th General from 1988 to 1992 and worked at Logistics. I went back to Germany in 2004 but was shocked to see that 5th General is pretty much a housing area. gone are most of the buildings except the old hospital building which was the Logistics HQ. The medical centre is used by the German Police now. the HQ building and car park has all been demolished to make way for housing. I am glad I took photos which preserve my time at 5th General and Robinson Barracks. I left Germany in 1993 but I had an amazing time there with the US Army that I will never forget. Chris Gowans
  • I was stationed at 5th in 1991 as a medic, ambulance driver. This was my first duty station. I absolutely loved it!
  • Chris, I served as the Chief Logistics at the 5th G from 85-88. Was there through eight of the major building renovations including the main in-patient building, the power/steam plant and of course the Logistics Building itself. 3 weeks after I arrived, our motor pool was attacked with fire bombs set under three vehicles. Luckily the bomb maker was inept and they failed to explode. I explored most of the tunnels that could be occupied but never down into the lowest level, which was flooded the entire time I was there. The electrical distribution mains running through those tunnels were a major risk. I never went anywhere without a flashlight. I remember discovering that the Germans during WWII had apparently painted a stripe of radium-based paint on tunnel walls so that people could navigate them during blackouts. It had been painted over but the radiological safety inspection team went crazy when their Geiger counters peaked in the tunnels. I served with many great folks there. Col Hansen was Commander when I arrived, a beloved man. My last boss there was the DCA, Col. Case. Too many names I've forgotten but many very fond memories of being the Chief of Log in what was considered to be one of the Army's most challenging hospital facilities in Europe because of it's size and age and condition. The people made up for all of the physical deficiencies with dedication and creativity to turn it into a first rate hospital we were very proud of. Glad you share the same feelings. John Chaffee
  • I was born there in 1965. I would love to see photos
  • I was stationed at Robinson Barracks from 1968 through 1970--HQ,USAG Public/Civil Affairs and AFN correspondent. My memories of 5th General revolve around the birth of my daughter in October 1969. Wonderful hospital, great staff and I'm embarrassed that I can't remember the name of my then-wife's doctor. I think it was Major Farinhold. If anyone was a staffer back then and you remember, please post it. What, if anything, remains of the hospital? Would love to know.
  • Loved the 5th. Stationed ther from 1979-81. Great camaraderie of the Hospital team!!!! LTC Dale Andres

  • Contact my daughter, Tina Marie Cundiff on Facebook. She went through the same thing . She was born there in 1980. She could help you to figure out what to do.

  • I was stationed at the 5th Gen Hospital as a military policeman in 1955 - 1956. I have been wondering if any of the members of my unit are out there? If so I would like to make contact.
  • Ronald Olds.........I was stationed at the 5th General Hospital as a Medical Corpsman from 1971 - 1973. I worked primarily on the Orthopedics Unit. I met some wonderful people, whom I've unfortunately lost contact over the last 40+ years. I went on to become a Registered Nurse (BSN) and then Master's of Science and was a Chief Nursing Officer for the majority of my professional career. I was fortunate to be able to recently retire early (63 years old). If any of my close friends ever read this comment, I would love to hear from you. I few of the names I remember are Larry, Mark, Bob Leonard, and Juan-Angel Longoria. You can find me on Facebook.
  • Robert Furgason... I was stationed a couple of kilometers away at Wallace Barracks just down the hill from Robinson Barracks. I worked in the Army Post Office at Wallace Barracks from 75-77. I loved the Stuttgart area and we would go to 5th G every Sunday morning to the mess hall for breakfast because the food was so good! I work with a lady that was born in Bad Cannstatt at 5th G. Small world.
  • James Merle Jent Robert, I was stationed at Wallace Barricks from 69-72. I was a window clerk and worked many units all over the place, from Patch to 5th general but did my final year as NCOIC at Robinson Barracks. You are the first person I've found that was stationed at Wallace. It is a small world.
  • I lived in Renningen up until 1983. I was involved in a car accident, the driver was John Strock. He was laid up at 5th G. My friend Andrea and I used to go to 5th G every weekend. They had CW bands there. We had an awesome time!!
  • I was thinking about 5th general and came upon your post with my name. I went on to be a Registered Respiratory Therapist and subsequently a Registered Nurse. I am retired and live in california (central coast). Bob Leonard
  • Sir, I was stationed there the same years you were and have MANY fond memories. I was a nurse at the hospital. Oh! those tunnels. I remember Capt Evanello and others. If you have ANY pictures, please, forward to me. I would be so appreciative. Facebook, Debbie Hamilton in SC.

  • My youngest son was born at Bad Cannstadt, Stuttgart September 12 1976. The Dr. who delivered him was Dr. Bailey. He saved my son's life!
  • Hi John I remember Cpt pecha talking about you in a fond way (you were a legend). well its amazing all the projects you managed and how they positely transformed the buildings. I remember Cpt Higgins and Sgt Cousins but some faces I cannot put names to. I think Mr Shrammel was the H&S officer and Mr Schrof was the facilites Manager. however everyone was very professional and respectful. i think being American in Germany in the late 80' and early 90's was very special way of life. I cannot think of anyone I spoke to who remembers their time in Germany not having fond memories. I liked Heidelberg and 130th Station Hospital but not as much as 5th General and Stuttgart. Chris Gowans
  • Hi Bob Leonard.....It's so nice to see that you've found your way to this 5th General Hospital site. I would love to talk to you. You can find me on Facebook or can reach me at oldsr@hotmail.com. I also posted pictures of the hospital on YouTube: Just type in 5th General Hospital
