The chronicles of the time, the court poetry, monastic foundations and iconography transmit images of virtue that must be assessed from three points of view: personal piety, courtesan religiosity and historiographical discourse. Messages made about the role to be played by queens contribute to strengthen the dynastic legitimacy, which was essential for the Avís and Trastámara families. Philippa was described in the time of king Duarte I as a perfect and imitable model of religiosity. Catherine did not enjoy the same consideration because of her activities during the regency of John II. |
