IPL Points Table

Indian Premier League’s (IPL) 17th edition begins on Friday, 22 March, with a clash between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The Chennai Super Kings, led by MS Dhoni, defeated Gujarat Titans (GT) in the IPL 2023 final by five wickets in a rain-curtailed contest in Ahmedabad and enter the 2024 edition as defending champions.

The 10 teams — Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Delhi Capitals (DC), Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Mumbai Indians (MI), Rajasthan Royals (RR), Gujarat Titans (GT), Punjab Kings (PBKS), and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), will take part in IPL 2024, like the 2023 and 2022 editions.

There were reports that part of the IPL 2024 edition would be held outside India due to the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections, but BCCI secretary Jay Shah recently confirmed that the tournament would be entirely played in India. A total of 12 venues will host the IPL 2024 matches. The venues are the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, Eden Gardens in Kolkata, Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow, Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad, Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Vizag, Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur, HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala and Maharaja Yadavindra Singh Cricket Stadium in Punjab. Vizag will host a couple of DC’s “home” games while Dharamsala will host a few games of PBKS.

Last year, the 10 teams were divided into two groups. While Group A had Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Super Giants, Group B consisted of Chennai Super Kings, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Gujarat Titans, Punjab Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad.

This time around, the group format has been done away with and the round-robin format has been reinstated. Each team will play the other nine teams in a home-and-away format, which means each team will play a total of 18 league games. A total of 74 games across 65 days, including the Qualifier 1, Eliminator, Qualifier 2 and Final, will be played. The final will be played on 26 May.

Chennai Super Kings winning the IPL last year meant that they were level with Mumbai Indians as far as IPL titles were concerned. Both CSK and MI have five IPL titles each in their cabinet. Kolkata Knight Riders are the next best successful franchise, having won the tournament twice. Sunrisers Hyderabad, and inaugural champions Rajasthan Royals have won the IPL title once. Deccan Chargers, who are now defunct, have also won one title, with their triumph coming back in 2009.
