When I listen to this album, I think "fun". Thomas and his band really enjoy themselves and this is clearly experienced by the audience. This recording reflects his unique musical contribution to jazz and its effect on listeners.

I purchased this classic first as a vinyl LP back in the '70's. At a time when the supression of the artistry and purity of the African culture was very much at work, the American culture felt it necessary to find ways to kill black expression...to minimize its effect on the revolutionary spirit. This is why they removed jazz from the radio back in the '40's. Leon Thomas was a beacon of light in the era of the '70's.I had the opportunity to see Leon Thomas live in concert in 1975 or '76 in Baltimore. While this is an awesome recordingof a concert in Berlin with Oliver Nelson and some of the best jazz musicians Germany has to offer, the live performance was one of the very best I have experienced, ever. Why are not artists like LEON THOMAS more widely known?and remembered? Yodeling is not easy to do.But to bring it to the level of artisty is tantalizing!!!

Leon Thomas in Berlin addresses the culture, theology, and vision on the 1970's era. This music is appropriate for the masses as well as the avant-garde neophyte. Thomas has a true vocal gift in that he is able to parlay the vocal word into a transient form of spiritual communicato. The transformation of this energetic concert into a beautiful rhythmic dynamic is felt in the Creator Has A Master Plan, and even through the Damn Vietnam conclusion. This concert is highly recommended even after almost 40 years. Leon Thomas in Berlin is still vibrant, fresh and invigoratingly new. Enjoy the Music.

This recording memorably showcases Leon Thomas' unique singing and scat-yodelling talents against the backdrop of a kinder and gentler free jazz sound than his better-known work with Pharoah Sanders, and an extremely appreciative audience. The band is just right: Oliver Nelson's grooves and solos on alto sax are a perfect foil for the vocals, Gunther Lenz "breaks down all the walls" on bass, and the rest of the rhythm section is right there too. But above all this recording catches some of Leon Thomas' finest vocal moments. His blistering, babbling, resonating scat solo on "The Creator has a Master Plan" explores the outer limits of what the human voice can do, and makes this the definitive rendition of that classic period-piece. Not many people can hear it without wanting to make those sounds themselves! The re-release of this recording on CD was long overdue, but at last it's here, and can assume its rightful place in our lives again. Three decades later, the verbal message of peace, love and the beauty of travel rings truer than ever, particularly from this most singular of voices.

I first heard this music on the original Flying Dutchman label in the 1970's. Just as good today as I remember it. Thomas has a timbre unmatched even by present jazz standards. All 6 selections are 5 stars. The signature Creator Has a Master Plan is presented better here, live, than studio recordings I have heard. Echoes captures Thomas' vocal range and mastery of sound improvisation. Rhythm section stays strong throughout. All praises to Leon Thomas wherever he may be in Heaven.

意外と正攻法な、ソウルフル・ジャズ。
Reviewed in Japan on April 5, 2017
