Biografie

  • Canned Heat are a band hailing from Los Angeles, California, U.S who formed in 1965. They are one of the unsung heroes of 60’s rock, famed as one of its best live acts and one of its most enduring forces, one that continues performing and recording to this day.

In the early 1960’s, when the blues was still the driving force behind most forms of guitar music, there were music fans, and then there was Bob Hide. Hide was a young man who loved the blues so much that his house in Topanga Canyon, California became something of a headquarters for collectors and traders of records from every genre around. However, just listening was never going to be enough for Hide, and in 1965 he put together the first incarnation of what would later become Canned Heat. Alan Wilson, who would later become Hide’s right hand man and constant member of the band up until his death in 1970, joined on bottleneck guitar but right off the bat the band had line-up troubles that would plague them for as long as they’ve been around. Hide still lead the band with whatever line-up he could find, and by 1966 he had attracted the attention of record producer Johnny Otis, and recorded his debut album with the band in the same year.

Of course, this album wouldn’t actually see release until 1970, and the band’s self-titled debut was a completely different record of blues standards that came out in July 1967. Shortly afterwards the band performed their biggest live show to date at the iconic Monterey Pop Festival, and with the positive notices that their album and their live shows were receiving, their profile started to rise dramatically. The band capitalised on this by releasing their single “On The Road Again” in 1968, which was a hit all over the world, the first blues song to hit the top ten on many singles charts the world over. Almost overnight, the band became one of the hottest groups in America, with praise coming in from fans, critics and fellow musicians, some of which were artists that the whole band adored like John Lee Hooker, who teamed up with the band for a collaboration album in the form of “Hooker ‘N Heat”.

Tragically, Wilson passed away in 1970, but Hide kept going with the band until his death in 1981. To this day the band continues with the same drummer that they’ve had since 1968 along with a mix of new faces and names from their long history. They’re still a band ready, willing and able to blow the roof off of any venue they play in, and with a back catalogue of some of the greatest blues rock jams of all time, Canned heat still come highly recommended.

  • Canned Heat

Canned Heat were considered by many to be one of the most under rated bands of the 60’s. The band started as the brain child of blues musicians Alan Wilson and Bob Hite and came to fruition in Los Angeles, California in 1965. They made a major jump into the spotlight after world class live performances at the Monterey and Woodstock in the late 60’s which resulted in the band achieving worldwide fame. It was only fitting, considering the line up of talented musicians in the band. With Bob Hite gritty vocals, Alan Wilson’s soulful harmonica, Henry Vestine’s mesmerising guitar solos, Larry Taylor with his funky bass lines and Adoldfo de la Parra rocking the drums. No one can doubt the bands talent. Despite not standing the test of time in the same way The Rolling Stones, The beatles and The Beach Boys have. They still were consider one of the most popular bands of the ‘hippie era’. This was largely down to their ability to perform live, they would perform blues classics, their own songs such as, ‘going Up the County’ and ‘On The Road Again’ and also embrace the time and indulging in lengthy psychedelic tracks. True legends of the swinging sixties!

  • Californian blues/rock musicians Canned Heat have silenced the uninterested masses of the 1960s who criminally underrated their music and the live show. Now half a century later, the band continues to tour globally to sold out venues of fans and newcomers alike yearning to see classic material from albums such as 'Living the Blues' and 'Hallelujah' in person.

The four musicians onstage are more than happy to comply as they dust off the guitars and take to the stage with the energy of a band half their age. The blues have always been relevant so therefore tracks such as 'Red Hot Mama' and 'On the Road Again' sound as fresh as ever despite having been released years before a number of the audience members were born. They run through a setlist comprising of what should have been huge hits yet are now cult like underground anthems. The whole audience gets involved in swaying and singing along to 'Let's Work Together' as a fitting send off to one of the hardest working bands in blues rock.

  • I saw Canned Heat in 2001 on the Naughty Rhythms tour when they topped the bill over Dr Feelgood and I’ve been waiting patiently to see them again so this was a must-see event for me.

When a band can open with ‘On the Road Again’ you know it’s going to be a good night and they rolled back the years with a great set of classics including a roaring version of ‘Let’s Work Together’.

One of the finest bands ever to come out of the USA and a great venue too.

    Memorable.

  • Canned Heat was great! Venue too small for this band to play at. It was very crowded and you could hardly move. Bathrooms were insufficient for the crowd.

I suggest they look at venues that can handle 300 or more. Canned Heat attracts a older crowd. Sun City area has an outside venue that could handle 500 or more and they'd get at least that many.
