So a while ago on Discord, somebody asked if there were any good sites to download videos from YouTube, and somebody recommended to use Y2mate.com. I want to use it, but I'm paranoid to do so because I don't want to risk getting a virus on my phone or on my computer.

yes, all you're downloading is an mp4 file. you can even scan it if you're that paranoid
You can check it against virustotal.com to see if it's been flagged by any major Anti-Malware programs. You can also scan the download to be sure it's safe before you open/run it.
I've used it a ton the last 3 years and have never gotten a virus. Just this week I used it probably a half dozen times; because I'll download as mp3 and then use another site to remove vocals for songs where instrumentals can't be found anywhere. I use a couple adblockers though, so it's also possible they help. But generally even without an adblock, as long as you don't open a malicious link, you're fine.
