The Changes in the Editor's Cut of SM3 Kinda Suck

Why remove the Aunt May scene towards the end or the Mr. Ditkovich for that matter, even if it's not as impactful? I think the score changes too on some parts, not giving those personal moments that emotional boost. But I won't discount the scene where Harry decides to help Peter after looking at a photograph of him, M.J., and Peter together, or the extra scene with Sandman and his daughter. Those were both great decisions.

I agree the Aunt May scene should’ve been kept but the editor was trying to go back to an earlier version of the film that was closer to the the original script, which lacked that scene. Originally Peter wanted to make amends with MJ without Aunt May nudging/encouraging him.

I’m sort of indifferent to the Mr. Ditkovich scene, but I think the scene in the editor’s cut with Peter apologizing to Ursula was better as it portrays Peter as tired and struggling with the addiction/drug allegory of the symbiote rather than oddly normal/cheerful after he takes off the suit. Peter apologizing to Ursula when she enters in the room I think (if I’m remembering correctly) makes the Mr. Ditkovitch apology scene redundant.

The Aunt May scene is great but with the other changes to the Editor's cut, specifically how Harry decides to help Peter without Bernard, cutting it works better for the themes of the movie

Oh I absolutely agree. I just wish Bob Murawski had kept the Aunt May even if the original script/earlier version of the movie originally didn’t have it because it’s such a good scene that could’ve still worked

I heard the editor said the point of removing it was to emphasize the characters making their own decisions, without suggestion. Same with removing the Bernard scene.

With Harry, it helps,

but removing the Aunt May scene though hurts the flow of the movie. After seeing the re-release in theaters, I almost prefer the theatrical cut for the presence of that scene.

Yeah someone on the blu-ray forums emailed him back in 2017 when the editor’s cut first came out and asked him about the removal of the Aunt May and that’s what he said. Iirc he said the theme of the cut was about “choice”.

It’s funny because I remember thinking that the theatrical cut was kind of rough compared to the editor’s cut when I saw the rerelease in theatres. I had forgotten was the theatrical was like because I only watch the editor’s cut when I rewatch SM3 nowadays. I do miss the Aunt May scene and I agree that its removal hurts the flow of the movie but overall I find it difficult to go back to the theatrical

Yea, the apology scene was great. Thanks for the background on the Aunt May scene. Seeing as how the film had already deviated enough from the original script, it would have made more sense just to keep the Aunt May scene in there. We don't really see that much of her in this one as it is.

The Aunt May scene removal makes the Editors Cut inferior for me as I feel like the movie goes into the final fight way too quickly.

However Harry’s change of heart being due to him seeing a pic of his friends is way better.

Exactly. I read on this discussion that the removal was done to bring the film closer to the original script but it was already a bit too late for that. I remember reading how the Editor's Cut makes the film way better (although I liked the theatrical version just fine) but idk. A couple of scene changes doesn't really earn that claim. They could've kept the Aunt May alongside the great changes they made like the Harry scene and the sandcastle scene. Now that would've made for a much better cut of the film.

Where did you see the editor’s cut? I cannot find it anywhere on the internet, and I mean anywhere..

u/dericjames2018 avatar

You can find it on the 2017 Trilogy Blu-ray set which is rare now.

Yea… it’s kinda impossible to get that, hence the internet searches

If you have a digital copy, try connecting that account to Movies Anywhere. The Editor's Cut is a bonus feature on Movies Anywhere.

I agree, but in my opinion, one of the best changes in the Editor’s cut are the changes to the structure of the second act.

It’s now changed to have the scene where Peter humiliates Eddie come before the fight with Harry, and thus have the dance montage occur after the fight.

I prefer this because it better demonstrates the addiction metaphor better, because after MJ breaks up with him, he chooses to wear the suit, just to make himself feel better, not even to fight Harry at first.

Also, I think it highlights the dark comedy that the dance montage is supposed represent, because it would just come after the scene where Peter nearly kills his best friend, rather than humiliating Eddie, so it is supposed to be taken less seriously, and more as dark humor.

But I do agree with your points, though, any Aunt May scene that was cut is a huge loss.

I totally agree with what you just said. The extra scenes really help in showing the black suit to be an allegory for substance abuse. I just wish it didn't come with the removal of some scenes that also added to the film.

Tbh, watching the theatrical cut in the theater during the re-releases, and hearing the audience cheer for certain scenes,

it made me learn to accept it for what it is, and not think about what ifs anymore.

The only good changes were the Sandman Castle, Black Suit in Daytime, and changing the Emo Dance to be after Harry's face gets blown up.

Literally nothing else is better in the editors cut, even then the black suit in the day time looks horribly unfinished and probably should’ve been cut too
