RFK Assassination 50th Anniversary: Who Are Robert F. Kennedy's Children?

American politician and lawyer Robert F. Kennedy, who was shot 50 years ago on June 5, 1968 and died the following day, left behind 11 children: seven boys and four girls.

Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, the couple's first child, was 16 years old when her father was assassinated. She attended law school, became a lawyer and dove into politics. She ran for Congress in 1986 and lost, but rebounded by becoming a U.S. deputy assistant attorney general, as well as Maryland's first female lieutenant governor in 2002. She founded the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Award.

Joseph Patrick Kennedy II was 15 years old when his father died. He dropped out of college before eventually graduating, and recklessly drove a jeep that overturned and injured his brother, David. He was elected onto the same U.S. House of Representatives seat held by his uncle, President John F. Kennedy, and served six terms.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was 14 years old and at his boarding school when his father was shot. He attended University of Virginia for law and worked as an attorney for the nonprofit Hudson Riverkeeper, after working with the organization as part of his sentence for heroin possession. He has asked that investigations into the murders of his father and uncle, JFK, be reopened.

David Anthony Kennedy was 12 years old at the time he lost his father, who had saved him from drowning in the Pacific Ocean earlier that day. He was reportedly very close to his father and became a recreational drug user after the assassination. He dropped out of Harvard University and was injured when his brother Joseph overturned the car they were in. He went in and out of rehab and died of a drug overdose at the age of 28.

Mary Courtney Kennedy was 11 years old when her father was killed. She took a different path than many of her siblings. Instead of going to college, she worked at the Children's Television Network, where she met her first husband. She divorced and her lived with her second husband, who was wrongly convicted of bombing a pub, for a few years in Ireland.

Michael LeMoyne Kennedy was 10 years old when his father died. Like one of his siblings, he graduated from Harvard and the University of Virginia. Besides working as a lawyer, he helped his uncle Edward Kennedy run for reelection in the Senate. He was investigated for statutory rape of a 16-year-old babysitter and went to rehab for alcohol abuse. He died in 1997 in a skiing accident.

Mary Kerry Kennedy was 8 years old when her father was killed. She finished law school and became a human rights activist and serves as president of the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Human Rights. She wrote a book about her father called Robert F. Kennedy: Ripples of Hope and on Tuesday honored him at her organization's human rights awards ceremony. "Is there a better way to honor Robert Kennedy than today?" she tweeted.

Christopher George Kennedy was 4 years old when his father died. Unlike many of his siblings, he got into business and founded Top Box Foods, a nonprofit that provides groceries at a discount to needy families. He became chairman of the Kennedy family investment firm, Joseph P. Kennedy Enterprises. He also tried his hand at politics, making a bid for the Democratic nomination for Illinois governor, but lost in the primary last March.

Matthew Maxwell Taylor Kennedy was 3 years old when his father was died, and was born after President Kennedy was assassinated. He graduated from Harvard University and earned his law degree from the University of Virginia, like some of his siblings, and is a human rights activist. Besides working as an assistant district attorney in Philadelphia, he served as the director of the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial.

Douglas Harriman Kennedy was a year old when his father was killed. He became a journalist and worked for the New York Post and Fox News and hosted the biweekly show Douglas Kennedy's American Stories.

Rory Elizabeth Katherine Kennedy is the only child that never met her father. She was born six months after he was assassinated. After graduating from Brown University, she had success making documentary films and started her own film company with college colleagues. She postponed her wedding for two weeks when her cousin, John F. Kennedy Jr., and others died in a plane crash while traveling to her ceremony.
