I don't purchase many movies. This one was worth my purchase. I'd been recommended the film and had previously borrowed it from the library
As a cradle, faithful, and unapologetically orthodox Catholic, I viewed the film well aware that some of its depictions of the inner workings of Catholic diocesan politics (albeit in this case from the late 1940s to the early 1950s) were and are rather reflective of reality, with the backslapping, good ol' boys culture, as well as the cover-ups, sacking, and steamrolling over other people (clergy) not on board with the current leadership's agenda. That being said, I know this is not the case in all dioceses or parishes, but it happens. Those Catholics in the "know".... well... know this goes on, and often. But we also recognize that in our Church, there are many human beings who can and do fail miserably at their calling to God's service, while still many others are faithful (at personal cost, like the elderly Irish priest in this movie). We recognize that and still love our Faith, even if it means sacrificing some of the public prestige and favor with those in authority on this Earth in order to keep our honor and do God's will (for He is the ultimate judge, and His commands are the most binding of all). The two brothers in this film exemplified this as well, in their way, especially the priest, as he redeemed himself by allowing himself to not continue up the diocesan chain of command, but end up in the diocesan equivalent of Siberia (in this case, the desert), in order to keep his honor and not continue to defy his conscience while working as the diocesan hatchet-man under his particular bishop. It appears as though he also engaged in some form of redemptive suffering as his illness took hold of his middle-age years, and, we are led to believe, his earthly life.
Finally, another steadfast moral in the movie is the bond between brothers. I wish that for my own sons someday.
This film, however, has plenty of crude language and some graphically rough scenes. Definitely not for the young kids. But for me, the overall story was worth purchasing the movie for -- and again, I don't purchase many movies.

邦題「告白」（原題：True Confessions ）1981年、米、カラー、108分、監督はウール・グロスバード（「ストレート・タイム」「恋に落ちて」等）。ロバート・デュヴァル、ロバート・デ・ニーロ主演、チャールズ・ダーニング、シリル・キューザック、ケネス・マクミラン、バージェス・メレディス、ローズ・グレゴリオ共演。
アイリッシュ系の2人の兄弟、正義感に燃える刑事の兄トム（デュヴァル）と将来を嘱望されるカソリックの神父デズ（デ・ニーロ）の14年に渡る悔恨と贖罪のドラマ。1962年、カリフォルニア。ある年老いた男トムが寂れて人里離れた砂漠の中の教会を訪れる。教会から出てきた長年合わなかった弟デズモンドは神父だ。言葉少ない2人に去来するのは昔の苦い出来事だった・・。
1948年頃。熱心な信者で、かつその筋で有名な娼婦のファゼンダが無残な姿で発見される。町の有力者で宗教界にも大きな影響力を持つ建設界の大物ジャック・アムステルダム（ダーニング）に疑いを持ち、毛嫌いし、逮捕に燃える兄。マグマを静かに奥にたたえた熱きデカ魂の男だ。離れて暮らす神父である弟は教会の財政面を取り仕切り、教会財政を顧慮してジャックと付き合いがある次期幹部候補。兄はジャック逮捕の糸口を見つけようとして弟に近づく。その娼婦殺害事件にはやがて教会の堕落、財界との癒着、娼館がらみの性的スキャンダルが見え隠れし始める。兄は弟の前でファゼンダ事件に関してジャックを罵倒し、貶める騒ぎを起こし、弟の立場は教会内部で非常に危くなる（過去の個人的私怨もあった）。やがて兄は決定的な行動を弟とジャックの前で起こしてしまう。この事件は兄弟をどこへ運ぶのか・・。
この殺人事件の（被害者の名・職業は変えてあるが）時代、場所、態様（腹部で2分裂）が、1947年のあのブラック・ダリア事件を思い起こさせる。ただしそれが本筋ではなく、ミステリーでもない（現実のブラック・ダリア事件も未解決）、あくまで立場の違いと人の信条が生む兄弟間の確執と歳月の流れが映画の本流。これは寡黙な、しかしお互いを尊重する兄弟の物語であり、聖と俗、清と濁、体面と本音のせめぎ合いを2人が体現している。兄弟どちらもそれぞれ違う世の中の表も裏も見てきた。経済的・権力的成功、勝者とは何なのか。これより勝るものは何なのか。
知識不足のため個人的にややつかみにくい部分もあるが、米における宗教界（カソリック）の微妙なパワーバランスの一端も窺える。グロスバードの的確でアンチクライマックスな作劇が非常に良い。検死解剖や現場検証・刑事部屋のシーンなども（正確性はともかく）その場の質感を十分に描写している。犯行現場のシーン、正邪併せ持つ人々のオブセッション、ブルーフィルムに代表される西海岸のダークサイドの存在も、後年の映画「ブラック・ダリア」と被さる部分がある。そして人間洞察に秀でた脚色は、控えめだが滋味があり、かつ台詞が物語や感情をストレートには説明せず、ささいなやりとりがその人物を立ち上げ、その関係を浮かび上がらせる点も良い。
小さな役にいたるまで、俳優が脇の脇に至るまでみな存在感がある（特に同僚刑事役マクミランと、過去にトムと訳ありの娼館の経営者ローズ・グレゴリオ）。またデ・ニーロとデュヴァルの演技対決などと公開当時にいわれたが、どちらも眼と沈黙が語る芝居で、派手なものではなく好感が持てる。2回の告解室のシーンは静かだが、2人の絆と別離を感じさせる名場面だ。若い時に観た際にはピンとこなかった。
スキントーンに注意が払われたオーウェン・ロイズマン（「フレンチ・コネクション」「エクソシスト」「ネットワーク」「コンドル」等）のカメラや、ほとんど流れていたかどうか思い当たらないジョルジュ・ドルリューの音楽はいつもどおりの安定感。本当に地味だがこのまま埋もれるのは惜しい1篇。実質★4つ半。
