CREATING A NEW VEGETABLE GARDEN

Two raised garden beds with gravel around them.

A handful of fresh compost.

A garden bed with heavy-duty landscaping fabric pulled back to the end.

GARDEN CROPS

Wild plants are products of their environment, and the ones that are less hardy and opportunistic don’t survive to pass on their genes. That’s why any old scrap of soil seems good enough for native plants to grow in. Garden veg is much different—your carrots, beans, squash, and lettuce are bred to produce big crops, at the expense of their survival skills. If wild plants are wolves, then garden crops are lapdogs. It’s a harsh world out there where there’s no friendly gardener to tend to you.

SITING YOUR GARDEN

Start by choosing the best place for your garden. Most vegetables and fruits need at least six hours of sun a day, so make sure that your plot gets enough light. If it gets sun all day, you’re spot-on, but if buildings or trees overshadow it, you may be limited in what you can grow.

NUTRIENT-RICH SOIL

Plants don’t grow in dirt; they grow in a complex mixture of crushed rock, minerals, organic matter, water, fungi, and other soil organisms. Plant roots even form relationships with living networks in the soil and draw nutrients from them. That’s why feeding the soil is more important than feeding plants.

FLORAL ICE CUBES

EDIBLE FLOWER FRITTATA

LAVENDER SHORTBREAD

FLORAL ICE CUBES

Simple, beautiful, and practical, edible flower ice cubes tick all the boxes. In essence, they are ordinary ice cubes with flowers frozen inside, which you can use to cool clear or light-colored drinks or to chill bottles of champagne. Imagine summer cocktails and parties—or, better yet, save them for winter drinks. There’s no better way to remember last year’s garden than with delicate flowers preserved as perfectly as they were on the day you picked them.

EDIBLE FLOWER FRITTATA

This is one way to have your flower garden and eat it too. Frittatas are a firmer-than-quiche egg dish that you start on the stove and finish in the oven. They’re simple to make, perfect for using up leftovers and eggs, and a delicious dish to serve up for breakfast, brunch, or anytime. What makes this frittata recipe unique is nasturtiums.

LAVENDER SHORTBREAD

Crumbly, buttery, and infused with sweet floral deliciousness. You won’t believe how easy it is to make homemade shortbread and how incredible it tastes with lavender. Though it’s a simple recipe, it’s essential to use the best-quality butter and flower buds. The latter can be dried or freshly plucked from the garden.

DIY HERB SPIRAL

A spiral outline made with bricks in a garden.

A person placing bricks in a spiral design.

A spiral garden filled with fresh dirt and new plants.

A finished spiral garden with herbs.

Create the spiral’s outline, then build it up with more bricks.

Move the bricks around at the end until you’re satisfied with the design.

The herb spiral, freshly planted with thyme, fennel, and sage at the top, and chamomile, savory, stevia, and parsley as it winds down.

Plant up to a dozen different herbs in this spiral planter.

Bottom Right Lavender oil can help calm irritated skin and speed up healing.

Gallery of Medicinal Plants

Grow medicinal plants to support immunity, ease common ailments, and to support female health. Here are some that you could add to your garden.

Top Left Lemon balm has antiviral properties that make it useful for topical creams and salves.

of migraines.

Bottom Right Raspberry-leaf tea can help ease menstrual cramps.

Gallery of Plants for the Home

Growing a garden close to home makes using plants in the kitchen, laundry, and cleaning all the more convenient.

Top Left Rosemary has antimicrobial properties, useful in home cleaning products.

Bottom Left The leaves from shrubby southernwood retain their camphor scent after drying and are useful in moth-deterring sachets.

Top Right Lavender varieties high in camphor, such as Lavandula × intermedia ‘Edelweiss’, are best for repelling clothes moths.

Bottom Right Dry sweet woodruff to release its fresh scent and insect-repelling properties.

Beautiful and useful, a must-have for garden lovers
Wonderful book full of lovely, practical ideas on making the most of your gardens! I really enjoyed the way the author features other women and their gardens — it’s inspiring to see their style and creativity and apply some of their techniques to my own gardens. The DIY projects are easy to understand and complete. I’ll be buying more copies for gifts.

A Women's Garden is a beautiful and inspiring book on grow and using plants. One of the things I really like about this book is that it's not just about one woman's garden, you'll get a peek into 8 different gardens that each have a different focus. While most of the gardens are in the UK, there are some in other parts of Europe and in North America.
While this isn't necessarily a "how-to garden" gardening book, there are plenty of tips and information for choosing growing various types of plants for each of the 8 gardens. The 8 gardens are edible garden, edible flowers, culinary herbs, plants for skin care, medicinal herbs, herbs for the home, dye garden, and a crafty garden. Along with growing tips, each section has several projects to make with the plants from the garden or a project for the garden.
I think this is a really great book to help you dream and see the possibilities of your own garden and the plants that you grow.

I loved this book so much, I bought two more as gifts. Lovely size, gorgeous pictures, great instructions, and the book itself is well-crafted. Such inspiring ideas. Simply wonderful. I find myself browsing through it regularly for inspiration and to refer back to ideas and instructions. And I’ve ordered some of the recommended flowers, berries, herbs and veggies. Tanya Anderson’s YouTube channel and website are absolute gems too! Check them out!

This is a beautiful book, but unfortunately, I looks like it was used as a door stop or something. Several pages at the end of the book are bunched up badly and kinda dirty.

This is a lovely book for gardeners. The rich and helpful text is supported by lots of photographs. I especially like some of the projects (pallet strawberry planter), recipes (floral ice cubes, flower petal fritatta, three-mint mojito), and various "Galleries" (edible flowers, culinary herbs, plants for the home). This is a beautiful and practical book. I pick it up for information often.

My wife and I bought this as a birthday present for her sister who is into gardening and making useful things from her garden flowers or herbs. This book has a lot of ideas which will really expand what my sister in law can make. It is well written and beautifully illustrated. It is a great gift but would also be an excellent addition to anyone's library !

I received an advanced ebook review copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley, and loved it so much I pre-ordered it.

If you want to start planting a garden that is a feast for your eyes, and provides materials for food, skin care, medicine, house cleaning and furniture treatment, and beautiful crafts, this book, which profiles several gardeners in the UK, US and Germany, will provide huge amounts of both inspiration and also the instructions to get you going. Soap, candles, bath bombs, and much much more. Directions for a raised bed are included, and most projects use the most "frugal" of construction materials.

Each gardener gives instructions on how to create and grow plants for specific purposes...such as edible flowers, plants that can be used to dye cloth or yarn, as well as garden projects that make growing more productive and also beautiful.

I love having so many different gardeners profiled, because you get to see gorgeous examples of multi-purpose gardens from a variety of sources.

And while there may be individual books that cover some topics in more depth (soap making or plant dyes, for example), this kind of book is the perfect way to get you started in ALL of these activities, with top notch, visually appealing projects that even make me want to make soap (and I've never had the inclination!).

I think this is a perfect book for both a beginner and advanced gardener for the same reason...this book helps you envision your own garden, and gives you the wisdom of several gardeners who are also artists in what they do. The photographs and instructions are top-notch and just pure inspiration.

Absolutely LOVE this book. Arrived yesterday and it's a feast for the eyes.
