Zac Efron might be the Hollywood star in his family, but he's had the support of his parents to keep him going.

Zac grew up in Arroyo Grande, California, where his parents, Starla Baskett and David Efron, worked at the same power plant. Zac’s parents keep pretty private, and the Greatest Showman actor isn’t that forthcoming about his family life, but he has shared his love for his mom and dad in interviews and on social media over the years.

“My parents love me in very different ways,” Zac told Elle in 2016. “But they checked every box. My dad always taught me to be driven. I was always the shortest kid at school. Always the worst kid on the team. I'd come home after practice and my dad would build a basketball hoop. Then we'd go out and shoot 100 free throws. Pretty soon every time I got fouled I would make my free throws.”

Together, Starla and David welcomed Zac and his younger brother Dylan in February 1992. However, they divorced in 2016, and David remarried. In addition to Dylan, Zac has two more siblings through his father’s second marriage: Olivia and Henry.

From working together to how they've supported Zac, here’s everything to know about Zac Efron’s parents.

Zac's parents met while working at the same power plant: Starla worked in administration, while David was an engineer.

In a 2010 interview with the Los Angeles Times, Zac explained that his upbringing was far removed from the celebrity world he would later join.

“Over dinner, we wouldn’t watch TV. We didn’t have Extra playing, or anything like that,” he said.

Starla and David are no longer together. In 2016, reports surfaced that they were divorcing, and David later went on to remarry.

While Zac and Dylan’s parents aren’t as public as their sons, fans can still catch glimpses of them on social media.

In 2017, he shared a photo of himself, Starla and Greatest Showman costar Hugh Jackman to celebrate his mom's birthday. “Happy Birthday to my mom, my best girl," Zac wrote. "I love you more than the sun, the moon and all the stars in the galaxy. Love, your chocolate bear.”

In May 2020, he shared a different photo of them, and wrote in the caption: “I love you mom.”

As for his dad, for Father’s Day in 2019, Zac posted a photo of David carrying him on his back when he was a baby.

“Me in back helping my Dad build our house,” he captioned the shot. “Honestly- from total scratch- thats the kind of guy he is. Happy Father’s Day, Dad. Love you."

In December 2023, Zac was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. A number of people showed up to celebrate with the actor, including his parents and younger brother Dylan.

"I really want to take this moment to thank my first fans, thank you to my family," Zac said during his acceptance speech. "Thank you mom, thank you dad and thank you Dylan. There's been a lot of sacrifices that you've made for me over my life and it couldn't have been easy, but thanks for believing in me. You're the reason I'm here today."

Zac expanded on his gratitude in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE at the event, getting emotional while talking about his parents' belief in him.

My mom and dad, they're the reason I'm here today,” the actor said. “They believed in me when I don't know how they did. It must've been difficult to drive me back and forth to auditions when I was 15, three hours from the Arroyo Grande out here, just to have such a small shot.”

He continued, “They believed in me, and they stuck with me, by my side, through all of it. And I think they sacrificed a lot to support me throughout the years."

Just weeks later, Zac shared a photo of himself kissing his mom on the cheek from the event on Instagram to wish her a happy birthday on Jan. 14.

"Happy birthday to my #1! your love and support made me who I am today- love you Mom," he wrote in the caption.
