ECUADOR ETHNICITY, RACES DEMOGRAPHICS OF INDIGENOUS PEOPLE OR INDIANS

Indians of Ecuador by Ethnicity and Race Demographics

1. Achuar: Living in the border region of the southern Amazon of Ecuador and Peru; The 6,000 Achuar live in the southern Amazonian border region of Ecuador and Peru in the Pastaza (Ríos Pastaza, Capahuari, Copataza, Bobonata, and Conambo) and Morona Santiago provinces.

2. Cofan: Most of the Cofan live in Colombia, with a smaller groups the Cuyabeno Wildlife and Cofan Bermejo Reserves;Most of the 15,000 Cofán live in Colombia with fewer than 500 in Ecuador, mainly in the Cuaybeno and Cofan Bermejo Reserves;

3. Kichwa: The Amazon Kichwa live mostly along the Napo River; The 60,000 Kichwa live mainly along the Napo and Aguaríco Rivers. It has been the tribe with the most hysteria with contact in social, political, cultural and economic spheres with the rest of the population and with social and state actors;

4. Secoya: There are about 400 Secoyas or Siekopai living along the Aguarico River and in Peru. Originally, a small group of Secoyas tribe lived at the mouth of the Cuyabeno River, they live along the Aguarico River and in Lagartocoche at the border of Peru;

5. Siona: The Siona have several villages in the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve, the largest being Puerto Montufar;

6. Shuar: The 65,000 Shuar live from Pastaza to the border with Peru and a part began to migrate to the provinces of Orellana, Napo and Sucumbíos in search of land, including in the Cuyabeno Faunal Reserve. This places them in the unusual situation of being settler and indigenous immigrants at the same time.

7. Tsáchila: The only remaining coastal tribe living near Santo Domingo;

8. Waorani: The 2,000 Waorani live in some 24 communities in the region between the Tiputini and Curaray Rivers. It has been the last ethnic group contacted and assimilated in Ecuador by the Summer Institute of Linguistics, later by the oil companies;

9. Zápara: This is one of the communities in the Ecuadorian Amazon that has been least worked. According to the 1991 census, its population was made up of about 24 people. They are located on the banks of the Ríos Conambo, Pindoyacu, and Curaray rivers;

10.  Afro-Ecuadorians: While not an indigenous tribe, Afro-Ecuadorians also are a distinct Ecuadorian ethnic group.

Ethnicity Ecuador by Race Demographics of the Indigenous People

Indians of different ethnicity and race demographics in Ecuador are wonderful to observe, weather in traditional dresses or just going about their daily family lives.

Ethnicity: 72 % of the people of Ecuador by demographics are (mixed race) mestizo Indians. Ecuador's ethnicity, highlights  of all 10 tribes and pictures of our tribal friends and children.  By race, indigenous People of Ecuador make up about 7 %, with heavy concentrations around Otavalo and in the Amazon Basin. 6 % percent of the population is caucasian. Afro-Ecuadorians make up about 7 % of the population and primarily live in Esmeraldas.

The genetic ancestry are generally consistent with ethnic identities and historical records. Nevertheless, some observations should be made. Afro-Ecuadorians show higher levels of Indians of Ecuador ancestry than expected which is different from any other Afro-descendant population in the Americas. As can be expected, mestizos show high levels of Indigenous People of Ecuador ancestry, as opposed to European ancestry, which can be explained by a great degree of indigenous integration into society. The recently recognized Montubio ethnic group is highly admixed, with substantial contributions from all three continental ancestries. The Tsáchila show two distinct ancestry subgroups, with most individuals showing almost exclusively Ecuadorian Indian ancestry and a smaller group showing a much higher level of European ancestry.

White each ethnic group in Ecuador has its own traditional clothing; it is mostly the women that still wear those traditional cloths every day, while men Ecuadorians wear traditional cloths mostly during festivals.
