Eating at the Markets

I was planning to have lunch inside either Mercat de Santa Caterina or Mercado de La Boqueria do they have food court there or is it just individual restaurants.

The lunch timing is a bit later like a 2pm but I noticed some tapas eateries at the market have opening hours listed as 7:30-3:00pm. Does it mean they serve tapas or food throughout that window?

Any recommendations of where in the market I should eat?

If i get Jamón at the market, could I safely assume that they are all edible straight away. Essentially ham that won't need to be cooked. Are there any I should look out for that can't be consumed straight away?

on markets there are food stands and bars/restaurants.

bar kitchens tend to be open all day so you can go there at any time.

i would suggest to eat at bars/restaurants as the food quality on those stands selling ready to eat food (mostly fried things and empanades) is quite low.

Bar Joan in santa Caterina and Bar Central or Clemens in la Boqueria shiuod be fine.

close to your lodgement, on mercat de Collblanc, you could try the bar Neme sandwiches. they have one of cod with allioli and green pepers that is quite popular (i should t try it someday).

Ok thanks for the tip.

Buying jamon, is there a specific type I should get?

Others may be more expert than I, but I would say jamon Iberico de bellota - pernil iberic de gla in Catalan (acorn fed iberico, which I believe comes from black Iberic pigs). I do not know what is served by whom at what market. I usually rely on the iberico served at Casa Alfonso, which I prefer to the market restaurants.

I went into La Boqueria on a Friday at around 11:00, back in October, and pretty much every bar that cooked and served food was fully occupied with its seating so there so you might have to stroll around and see if you get lucky. I was going to eat there but it was too busy so I wondered down to Quimet Quimet and waited there for it to open. I was not disappointed there but it is tiny and it’s first come first served. You get a time limit on your table/bar space too. I was on my own so only needed one seat.

So do you just hang around at the bar staring down peoples shoulders while they eat and pounce on the seat when they are done :D. or is there a line?

I ate at Quimet Quimet last time. It was good, but chaotic! :D. I had to go back 3 times before I was able to get in, they were doing stocktake or something at the time and wasn't open but i managed to get them on my last go.

Sort of yes. Walk around and as soon as there is a gap get your sharpened elbows out and lever yourself in! 🤣
