Now It's My Turn: A Daughter's Chronicle of Political Life Paperback – March 14, 2008
Purchase options and add-ons
In the most eagerly awaited political memoir of the season, Mary Cheney, who served as a top campaign aide to her father, the vice president, presents a behind-the-scenes look at the high-intensity world of presidential politics and talks for the first time about her life, her family, and her role in the campaigns of 2000 and 2004.
As a senior adviser to her father, she was in the middle of every major event of the 2000 and 2004 presidential contests -- at the conventions, the debates, and on the trail. Both elections made history -- and so did Mary. And for the first time ever, she writes about what it was like to be at the center of her father's campaigns as his daughter, as a member of the senior staff, and, though she never intended it, as a political target for the other side.
Mary, her experiences, and her opinions, have been the subject of intense debate in the media and from activists on both ends of the political spectrum, but she has never spoken publicly about herself, her life, or her political views -- until now.
In Now It's My Turn, a frank, funny, and down-to-earth memoir, Mary Cheney describes life inside the bubble of a national campaign. She talks about her close relationship with her parents, how it feels to be pursued by the press, and what it was like when John Edwards and John Kerry made her sexual orientation an issue in live debates televised to millions of Americans. As she describes it, life inside a presidential campaign can be uplifting, frustrating, and heartbreaking, but no matter what else it may be, it's always entertaining.

Mary's sexuality is something that many bring up, but for me it is just sliver of the person that she is. Some may wonder how she was able give her full-throated support to a father that does not agree with the way she lives her personal life. For me it is easy to understand because how many parents fully agree or support everything that their children do? What we do see is that it is her belief that her father is the best man for the positions he was running for. This is especially seen when he was running with then Gov. George W. Bush for the highest offices in the country. Mary was right there, championing her father's credentials yet careful not to let herself become a distraction.
For me NOW IT'S MY TURN showcases who Mary Cheney is, how she is able to live her life unafraid and walk in the life that the wants for herself. We are also able to see how she was not going to be defined by what others thought she should be doing and not limit herself by labels and stereotypes.
No matter what your political leaning, this is a book that champions the power within us all and challenges us to live our best authentic life each and every day.
What causes me to rate this book so lowly is the almost vindictive tone Cheney takes in discussing her father's opponent in the 2004 election. She accuses them of using her and her sexual orientation to score political points but is willing to give her father's boss a pass for the efforts he has done (and continues to do) to do the same. She prides herself on skipping a State of the Union speech because Bush was going to use it to call for a Constitutional amendment to ban same sex marriage but doesn't seem to have a problem with the fact that her father applauded this call during the same speech. In other words, John Edwards gets slammed for praising the Cheneys in how they've accepted their daughter (and even her father thanked John Edwards for his "kind words about my family") but her father applauding Bush's call for a Constitutional amendment that Mary herself has called in interviews as "writing discrimination into the Constitution" is not a problem. I guess her REAL problem with John Edwards is that he had the gall to run against her father for Vice President. It seems to me that Ms. Cheney wants to have it both ways and I can't recommend this book for its, well, hypocrisy.
After reading this very well written book in one day, I came away feeling that I have gotten to know the Cheney, especially Mary, a lot better. This is an All-American family who love, cherish, support and come to the defense for each other.
You will also read about her close relationships with her family and enjoy hilarious stories from the road, from bed bugs to blue goo. You will enjoy some of the less than glamorous situations encountered during a campaign.
In the debate chapters, (the ones that seem to have generated the most news) you will see that not only did the Cheneys and their supporters think the mention of Mary Cheney's sexuality was a "Cheap and Tawdry Political Trick" but just as importantly, how offensive it was that both Kerry and Edwards presumed that they could speak for Mary Cheney or her parents.
You will enjoy this book if you would like a behind the scenes look at the world of presidential politics. You will see a unique perspective on two of the closest and strangest presidential elections in history. If you enjoy heartwarming, funny, and candid family stories you will appreciate the strong relationships in this previously very private family.
