Hampton has a lot of school pride, the class names and the little traditions make the school stand out to me. The campus is beautiful and the area is safe, especially for women and pedestrians.
Great experience. I built lots of close relationships. I felt comfortable and adjusted well to my first year.
The campus is beautiful and has a lot of rich history and traditional event. Certain departments get more attention than others which is what I would like to see a change in. Also, the professors are well qualified for their jobs and have lots of previous experience or came from notable universities. I love the opportunities to meet new people and the school is diverse in the aspect of where people have traveled from to attend. I will note that it is important to understand HBCU cultural when attending an HBCU.
Overall I enjoy being at Hampton because of its home like atmosphere and how close you become with the students. With such a small population overall, gaining meaningful friendships and getting to know the staff and professors is very easy.
Beautiful campus on the water. Recent interior upgrades have been made but not enough. The food is decent and better than it was.
Why has Hampton recently dropped out of the top 5 HBCUs in rankings?
1. Administration responds during recruiting but not once you're there. Rude to/ignores students & parents. #1 college experience motto inconsistent with not answering phones/responding to students.
2. Not keeping up with technology. (poor WiFi and infrastructure).
3. Science equipment outdated. Music studio boarded up for 2 years.
4. Elderly, out of touch professors, who don't consistently enter grades. Only 1 prof teaching some subjects.
5. More focused on how to punish you than how to develop you. Students kicked out or banned for life for holding leadership position on 1st minor infraction without due process even upper classman.
6. 7. Not worth $40,000 a year. Get treated better/even the same for LESS somewhere else (HBCU or PWI).

Attending Hampton University I have learned a lot, as a black woman being surrounded by people who are just like me has helped me become more confident in my character. In addition to its variety, Hampton University offers several advantages, such as academics. I think the activities this school offers are beneficial, especially when they have events that allow every student to excel academically.
There are a few drawbacks that I would want to bring up to provide a fair and honest evaluation. To begin with, I think there should be a lot of modifications made in the housing sector. Even though this institution is ancient and has a lot of historical significance, I think the living arrangements and surroundings need to be changed. One more drawback I would like to bring out is how difficult it is to reach people. I've done summer courses, and you always have some difficulties since it's online. The search for assistance proved to be incredibly frustrating.
Thank You

The academics at the school are amazing. The downside to the school is the admissions, financial aid, food, and housing. The admissions and financial aid will give you the run-around, all the wrong answers, or no response at all. The food is terrible and so is the attitude of most of the staff working in the cafeteria. They talk down on the students and show a general lack of respect for the people they are serving. The housing is out of date and the housing selection process is just unfair, everyone is not given the same chance to get better housing. It does not matter how good your GPA is if you are not in an organization or an athletic sport you will choose last.
The school is pretty rigorous academically, but professors can be very difficult to understand and communicate with. There is only one dining hall and the food is terrible. The campus is overall very safe and is in a nice area on the James river. Housing is hard to come by after your first year though.
I am a student at Hampton University, and while I have no intention of disparaging this esteemed institution, there are certain aspects I wish I had been aware of before enrolling. Despite Hampton’s reputation for being supportive and attentive to its students, I have not found this to be the case. The faculty and staff, in my experience, have not been helpful, and I have often found their demeanor disrespectful. I have suffered from food poisoning on two occasions, which is attributed to undercooked meals that we pay $5000 for. It’s disheartening to think that we invest so much money, yet we are not provided with proper meals, adequate treatment, or satisfactory living conditions. There’s even mold in the dorms. However, the campus is indeed beautiful, and it offers a sense of safety. You could venture out at 2 am and feel completely secure. But that’s about the extent of it. Hampton is not known for its party scene, and the surrounding area doesn’t offer much in terms of either.
Being able to attend Hampton University has opened my eyes a lot because I have gotten the opportunity to connect and network with different people, as well as attend different events that I would've never went to if I was still in New York.
Great school academically. Beautiful campus. For the most part a great school. The administrative offices is what makes the school horrible. Noone at this school is familiar with the meaning of customer service. There is no administrative office that is interested in helping you. They REFUSE TO ANSWER the phones (financial aid, student accounts). On the phone, your call is DEFINITELY going to voicemail. When you go to voicemail you can't leave a message because the voicemail is going to be FULL. They have this department emails for you to send an email to and you will NEVER get a response from one of those emails. It takes a miracle to get a response via email or phone. It's a shame such a great school is ruined by customer service. It's so frustrating that you can't reach anyone. I hope the president or the board reads this message and bring about some changes. Hire more people if necessary. Take a survey to see that I'm not the only one and DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!!! Please. Terrible
My overall experience with hampton university has been good. They give out many opportunities and I really like the events that they hold to give you information about your career/major I don't feel like a lot of schools do that.
While, I do enjoy going to Hampton. I do have a few critiques. Firstly, I would like to say that Hampton is very fun and they do a good job at keeping the students entertained but my problem with Hampton is every office at the school does not like to answer the phone or do any work.
This school is literally the trenches but I met some amazing people here. Theres 3 cemeteries on campus + it used to be a plantation. Theres mold and bugs in the dorms, too few washing machines and theyre often dirty. Food was otfen moldy and rarely flavorful. Theres strict visitation hours in the dorms and all academic bldgs close around 10/11 so by 12am you basically just gotta go to your dorm. Police raids happen in dorms often (except Dubois). The admin is dismissive of mental issues and sexual assault/harassment. The school has a narrow view of Blackness and pushes Black students into white standards of success/professionalism. Their money is highly mismanaged. Many students are legacy and see HU through rose colored glasses bc of the pressure from their families. The town of Hampton is very sleepy, has a houselessness problem and there is not much to do, but Virginia Beach is only 45 minutes away if you don't mind the drive. Professors can be harsh but baby students at times.
Let’s start off with this: Nearly everything I’ve been told about how great this school is is a LIE. Hampton is more like a bubble than a real community, where people are physically together, but are so cold. It’s hard making friends here especially when all my other friends transferred/are transferring, and I moved off campus this year because the housing options for men are horrible after freshman year. Let’s not forget this school has a big elitism problem, people here believe they are better than everyone else and treat people as such, it’s like people are more worried about how many fits you can put on rather than personality and substance. Another problem is that the education to me is sub par, no advisement, my department is short staffed, offices never pick up the phone, etc. Some of my classes feel like a joke honestly. And the rules here seem like they were made for 7th graders not college kids. I’m really looking at transferring out of here but to stay they need to lock in.
this school makes you grow up. there are teachers and admin who genuinely care about your well being outside of school work. the party scene is good and homecoming week is always fun!!
I love the people I've met while attending Hampton University. I've created a lot of connections in the marching band, the education department, and the organizations I've joined.
