Review of Round -Trip Crossing (New York to New York) on Queen Mary 2 The “Old Lady” is not what she use to be. My wife and I just completed an eighteen day round trip crossing from New York to Southampton to Hamburg to Southampton to New York on the Queen Mary 2. Our expectations which were, high as we booked, were sadly and materially not met on the crossing. Some positives were received such as dinner dress code, room steward, coffee in the room, and others. But sadly, way too many negative service expectations over-shadowed the good parts of the trip. Examples are: 1. Bathroom issues – while playing blackjack, my wife had to go to the restroom. She asked for the nearest one. Two were pointed out by the pit. The first was closed. The next one had nine stalls, all closed except for one. When playing bridge, two bathrooms were available just outside the room. One day neither bathroom was open and we were told to go two decks down for the nearest bathroom. This was after the director had asked for someone to address the issue. 2. We bought a premium nonalcohol drink package. We were not allowed nonalcoholic wine with the package. 3. Frequently in the buffet dining, juice glasses were out. Breakfast had coffee machines that worked great. However, on more than one occasion several of the machine were not filled or working correctly. At the burger grill, likely the ketchup, mayo, mustard dispenser was not refilled on a timely basis. Breakfast was always the same offering, e.g. same two types of muffins every day. No station for eggs, omelets made to order. Asking for ice tea I received three different answers for the servers: one we don’t have ice tea, two make your own if you want it using hot tea bags, and third one server brought me ice tea. 4. In the primary dining room, we waited way too long on several days for the food service. One night we waited 45 minutes after ordering desert leaving finally without. Several other days the service at dinner took way too long. We decided to try the dining room for breakfast. My wife ordered scrambled eggs with cheese. After several people coming in after us were served we asked the dining steward and he told us the delay was because of scrambling eggs with cheese took much more time. 5. The exercise room was adequate but more than one there were no glasses for water or water was not replaced in the bottle. At the end of the cruise a fellow passenger told us that one excuse was given to him. An employee had told him the Queen Anne (recently launched) had a bad first experience, so they took several of the experienced staff from Queen Mary 2 and replaced the staff with inexperience ones. To me that was not justification for the lack of service for those of us so excited to try a voyage that we heard was elegant and service oriented. We now will go back to Celebrity and Holland America where service and food far exceeds what we received on the Queen Mary 2.

Cunard complaint Last April 28th my wife & I sailed on Queen Mary 2 on our long anticipated Golden Wedding cruise, booking reference 2T3X5W, Voyage Number M410A, World Club number SH07175T, Rm 4202. Our pleasure was very short lived as on going to bed the first night we very quickly realised sleep was impossible due to the loud music heard in our cabin through the floor & vibration through our pillows! We discovered that our allocated room was noisy due to being directly above Queen’s room, a music venue. This for us was untenable as, the noise consisted of music which was vibrating through the floor and our pillows, thus preventing sleep, until it stopped about 23.45. . At about 23:45 I phoned the purser who patronisingly suggested we moved our beds away from wall! And also that they would ask entertainments to reduce music volume.! The following day we were understandably very tired but that night tried again to sleep in that same cabin but to no avail until the noise stopped about 1 am.. In the morning I visited the Purser and insisted we were given a different cabin, threatening to sleep on a lounge sofa or in a lifeboat at night. This we got but only available until New York. I was told to check again after embarkation closed in NYC We changed to this much quieter cabin but were offered no assistance to move our effects consequently we both suffered back ache for a week. In NYC I waited until embarkation was finished then visited the Purser and got another room for the return passage. We had help to move our effects though that was unsatisfactory as they were not all delivered together. This whole negative experience blighted our journey and severely affected our pleasure of this cruise. We also have a serious objection to the gratuities levied on our accounts. While I understand the gratuities system and 15% being levied everywhere there can be no justification for the flat weekly rate of $112 charged to our respective onboard accounts regardless of expenditure. Over our 2 weeks I spent $445 and was charged $224 service charge, a rate of 50.3%,!!! My wife spent $296.72 and was also charged $224 service charge, 75.49% Both these shocking amounts are totally inexcusable and amount to barefaced robbery. On my account $445 x 15% amounts to $66.75, 15% of my spending so I demand you refund the difference of $133.5. Likewise my wife is due a refund of $224 - $44.51, a sum of $179.49 How can you possibly justify such exhorbitant charges? In my view this is inexcusable and amounts to greed and theft. You have stolen our money. On top of this mess you have the effrontery to give customers the “opportunity” to tip the bar staff, when we’ve already paid them! Just pay all your staff a decent wage My wife and I had looked forward to this trip for some time and were bitterly disappointed and seriously disillusioned in our entire experience with the whole Cunard customer service product. The whole operation is geared up to screw as much money as possible from the mugs you call passengers who cannot shop elsewhere. I doubt we will ever travel with you again and will advise all our friends to avoid you too.

Maybe the expectations for such a ship are too high. We only sailed from Hamburg to Southampton, but that was enough for us. You can tell that the transatlantic liner is a bit old. The cabins are practically furnished but in the style of the 80s. In the restaurants and entertainment areas you can see the general problem in the service right now everywhere: lack of staff. And that's why some service staff seem very stressed. The food on board, both in the Brittania Restaurant and in the self-service restaurants, was also rather average, although varied. We even met people that wanted to leave with us in Southampton but were booked to NY. Would we travel with the QM2 again? Rather no.

We have never been on a cruise and searched for the perfect one. Based on QM2's on-line advertising and their brochures, we selected it.We did the 7 day cruise from NY to South Hampton. The ship was beautiful, our state room stunning, service outstanding, and food was good. That said, based on the ads we thought we were going on a cruise with people of all ages. Boy, were we wrong! We felt like we were in a floating, luxury , assisted living facility! Their ads need to depict the reality of the clientele. So many walkers, canes and wheelchairs. Not that we did not fit in..but, nothing ages you quicker than surrounding yourself with older people entirely. If you are under 60 this might not be the cruise for you.

Cunard's Clever Capers. "Remember the maxim..." the big print giveth and the small print taketh away".Remember to Read the Cunard set of conditions very carefully. We travelled from Cape Town, up the coast of West Africa to Europe and finally made the Atlantic Crossing to New York. 24 days worth and I learnt a heck of a lot about Cunard , some of which I'm happy to share with you. 1 Gratuities. If you don't want to pay for them, you must go to Reception as soon as possible after Embarkation to cancel them immediately and.... here's the kicker, you must cancel them at EACH SEGMENT of your journey Gratuities cause more arguments than is believable!!! Sadly, so many passengers have failed to remember this and therefore copped the gratuity... and Cunard will not remind you. I prefer to pay the crew personally. 2. Costs on board are only charged in U.S dollars. This is a problem for Australians with our weaker currency against the U.S Dollar. 3.You won't necessarily get the Stateroom you want. In particular if you are not doing all segments of the journey. If you're not doing the entire journey, you can often get the dregs of Staterooms. 4.Wild-Cat Cancellations. Cunard sometimes cancel a voyage without warning and often with little explanations e.g technical difficulties but they will offer you good compensation. 5. Sudden Change to Itinerary. Occurred recently on tours to New Zealand. 6.Impossibly long Queues at Embarkation for Customs And Immigration..... 30 minute time calls would overcome this problem. Long queues of irate passengers, arguments and impatience. Cunard must do something about this before there is a passenger mutiny. 7. Seating at Dinner. We specifically booked for a two person table but instead we were wedged into a six with two couples almost sitting on top of us on either side. So, in effect, it was a table of three pairs of two's wedged closely together. ] 8.Not 100% sure about this but there was a perception among some passengers that Passengers from the U.K. seem to get additional benefits and on shore credits. Passengers from other countries do not get these. 9 Lunch-Time at the buffet can be chaotic due to overwhelming numbers of guests arriving all at once. 10. Rude Passengers. Tempers often become frayed during lunch hour at the buffet. Long Queues and people pushing in can lead to arguments galore. Embarkation and disembarkation can be your worst nightmare. 11. Don't do a land tour on an embarkation day, as getting back onto the ship involves very, very long Queues. 12. The Water Trap. If you buy Cunard's bottled water, you'll burn a hole in your wallet as it costs $3.50 U.S per bottle. The larger Drinks Package is also very expensive. A better alternative is to bring a couple of your own water bottles and keep refilling them at the drinks station near the buffet. All at no cost!!!! 13. Very Little love for you when you disembark. No help! You have to find your way out and hope a cab eventually turns up. Again, the Queues are horrendous and you can be stranded for hours 14. The Atlantic Crossing. Don't bother with a balcony on this Cruise Save your money! The Atlantic Crossing is so cold, windy and with rough seas. We had a balcony and hardly used it. 15. Some very good guest speakers during the day. 16 Nightly entertainment is competent but lacks the wow factor.. 17. Disembarkation at a New York was a nightmare. 1000's of people disembarked. There was no organisation, the Queues went on forever. Cunard gave no directions, people were getting angry. People flaunted the rules and came at the wrong time. Cunard started making announcements, but all too late. The damage had been done. It was like Cunard did not care! However, despite all the aforementioned problems, we enjoyed the cruise immensely,..... but then again, we would enjoy cruising at any time, even in a row-boat!!!!
