Katy Mahoney (Jamie Rose) was a detective with the Violent Crimes Division of the 39th Street Station of the Chicago Metro Police Department.
She patrolled the gritty streets of Chicago, dispatching the seamier elements before reporting to her boss, Terry McNichols (Danny Aiello), and usually getting in trouble for being so stubborn and violent.
Like Clint Eastwood’s Harry Callahan, Mahoney packed a .357 calibre Magnum with a four-inch barrel.
In fact, the ABC series was sometimes referred to as “Dirty Harriet” and “Skirty Harry”.
Katy had lost all the men in her life. Her father and brother, who were both police officers too, were killed in the line of duty, and her boyfriend was also killed. She had no hobbies, no relationships, no pets – she lived for her work, and the streets were her life.
In November 1985, the National Coalition on Television Violence cited Lady Blue as the most violent show on the air, averaging fifty
violent acts per hour. Jamie Rose defended the show, saying, “we live in a very violent world. There was violence by very bad guys (in the show), and I dealt with them in as deadly a way as they dealt with the public”.
