From Growing up with Jackie Kennedy to Being a Princess: Lee Radziwill's Life in Photos

Lee Radziwill, the daughter of Janet Norton Lee and John Vernou “Black Jack” Bouvier, grew up in New York City and East Hampton and attended Miss Porter’s School, along with her sister, Jackie. She developed a passion for art, writers and fashion that continued throughout her life and made her a style icon for decades.

The sisters — pictured on a boat in 1951 — were as close as they were competitive. Lee was considered “the pretty one,” and her sister “the smart one.”

“The competition went on throughout their lives: ‘Who’s going to be more popular? Who will marry first?'” Jackie, Janet and Lee author J. Randy Taraborrelli told PEOPLE in January 2018.

Although Lee married first, to Michael Canfield, the competition “came to a crashing halt when Jackie became First Lady,” Taraborrelli remarked. “Lee [was] saying, ‘How can I compete with that?'”

Still, the two sisters remained close throughout Jackie's time in the White House, and would frequently travel toether as the First Lady's duities took her around the world.

In fact, in 1961, the first year of John F. Kennedy's time in office, the two sisters even traveled to Pakistan, where they took a camel ride together.

Although Lee and Jackie still enjoyed each other's company, Lee began embarking on numerous different career paths of her own in the 1960's — including acting and interior decorating.

She also began befriending some of the greatest and most stylish artists of her time, including ballet star Rudolf Nureyev, conductor Leonard Bernstein, and artist Andy Warhol, with whom she is pictured in New York in 1973.

Lee also came to her sister’s side after JFK’s assassination in 1963, reportedly leaving a note on Jackie’s pillow after the funeral that read, “Good night my darling Jacks — the bravest and noblest of all. L.” Two years later, the sisters and their kids were seen in London in 1965.

In 1959, after divorcing her first husband, Lee went on marry the Polish aristocrat Prince Stanislaw Albrecht Radziwill, with whom she had two children, Anna Christina and Anthony Radziwill. The family was photographed together in 1968.

Stanislaw and Lee's marriage would end in divorce in 1972. She later married Hollywood director Herbert Ross, whom she divorced in 2001.

Another one of Lee's famous friends was author Truman Capote.

The pair were incredibly close and even shared a dance together at Capote's Black-and-White Ball at the Plaza Hotel in New York in November 1966.

Capote also had a hand in Lee’s brief foray into television acting, as he helped write the script for the television film Laura, which aired in January 1968.

Lee played the titular character alongside actor Farley Granger.

The sisters, pictured on a stroll in New York City in May 1970, both lived in Manhattan. Lee came to Jackie’s bedside the day before she died to say goodbye in May 1994, telling her, “I love you so much. I always have, Jacks. I hope you know it.”

Lee and Jackie had many memorable style moments, including this 1970 night in New York City. In her later years, Lee gave a few interviews about her legendary life. She told the New York Times in 2013: “Regrets? I think everyone has regrets, and people who say they haven’t are either liars… or narcissists.”

“There have been many things in my life to have regrets about, in the sense I wish I could have changed them, or somehow made them not happen," she added. "What I don’t have is envy. I’m perfectly content at this time of my life. I’ve done so many fascinating things and the greatest joy is that I continue to do interesting things and meet fascinating people.”
