Garden City, KS – Garden City High School is excited to welcome Matt Bayer as the new Athletic Director of the Buffaloes. A native son and alumnus of Garden City, Bayer returns to his roots with a wealth of experience and a profound commitment to the Buffalo spirit.
His journey, which includes a notable tenure as the Principal of Scott City High School, is marked by a deep-rooted connection to Garden City, his birthplace and alma mater. A 2005 graduate of Garden City High School, Bayer furthered his education at Garden City Community College, where he was an active member of the football team, before completing his education degree at Fort Hays State University.
His career with USD 457 began in 2010 as a teacher before becoming the Assistant Principal/Athletic Director at Kenneth Henderson Middle School. Matt left Garden City Public Schools in 2021 when he was hired as the head principal at Scott City High School, where he currently serves. Bayer is also a member of the KSHSAA Board of Directors, which will bring valuable insights and leadership to enhance the athletic programs at Garden City High School.
“Matt Bayer is not just returning to a place he calls home; he is coming back to inspire and lead a new generation of Buffaloes,” said Steve Nordby, Garden City High School head principal. “His first 90 days will focus on building relationships within our department, school, and broader community, underscoring his commitment to our success and heritage.”
Sharing his excitement, Matt Bayer expressed, “I’m thrilled to begin engaging with our coaches, understanding their programs, and sharing my vision for our athletic department. Garden City is not just a place I call home; it’s a community I’ve always aspired to serve. I’m deeply grateful to Steve and the district for entrusting me with the responsibility of leading an athletic department with a rich history.”
On his departure from Scott City, Bayer remarked, “I’m going to miss Scott City and the opportunities they gave me and my family. It is a great community with great people and leadership. I cannot thank Mr. Rumford and the community enough for trusting me over the past three years.”
Drew Thon, former Athletic Director and current District Chief HR Office, commented, “We are excited to get a former Buffalo back to lead our Athletic Department. Matt has all the tools to be an outstanding athletic director, and most importantly, among them is his passion for being a Buffalo!”
Matt Bayer will be relocating to Garden City with his wife Brooke, an elementary teacher, and their three children, Quinten, Griffin, and Dawsyn, reinforcing his ties and dedication to the community and his alma mater.
