Pancho Villa reitet aus dem Jahr 1968 bietet eine Topbesetzung auf. Yul Brynner, Robert Mitchum und Charles Bronson sind mit den Hauptrollen besetzt. Es ist klar zu erkennen, dass der US-Western sich am damals so populären Italo-Western orientiert, denn er ist von diesen kaum zu unterscheiden.
Der Pilot Lee Arnold (Robert Mitchum), eigentlich für die mexikanische Regierung unterwegs, lernt den Revolutionär Pancho Villa (Yul Brynner) kennen, entwickelt sogar Sympathien für ihn und unterstützt ihn im Kampf gegen die Regierung.
Ungewöhnlich Yul Brynner mit Haaren zu sehen 🤣. Er büsst aber dadurch auch eine gewisse Portion seiner Faszination ein. Charles Bronson spielt ne ähnliche Rolle, wie er sie schon in manchen Italos verkörperte.

There's a better alternate world in which Sam Peckinpah directed a near spaghetti western about Pancho Villa joining forces with gringo Robert Mitchum, but it seems Yul Brynner hates good things and got Sam fired. This is interesting for historical reasons, a big international co-production with mostly American talent that is very influenced by Eurowesterns, but also feels close to that bloated late 60s style. Very mediocre directed and unengaging but a few decent action beats.

Sam Peckinpah wrote the first draft of this and was due to direct but arrogant idiot Yul Brynner, inexplicably cast here as Pancho Villa, got him sacked claiming he did not understand Mexico. Which is a bit like saying Einstein didn't understand relativity. Peckinpah's replacement is the pedestrian Buzz Kulik. It might have made Brynner happy but it doesn't do the same favours for its audience.
Aside from having a near fifty year old Russian to play Villa in his early thirties, the casting of all the Mexican characters here is fucked up. There's half Lithuanian Charles Bronson as Villa's loyal lieutenant and Czech Herbert Lom as his foe, General Huerta. In the middle of it all is a sleepwalking…
Yul Brynner plays Pancho Villa, though he looks more like Emiliano Zapata. At first his part is a little too statuesque, all stoicism and brutality, but Villa's sense of humor gradually emerges over time. Robert Mitchum plays an American pilot who flies some guns over the border in his biplane, and ends up getting roped into fighting with Villa. Mitchum, quite frankly, isn't very good in this, and appears to be sleepwalking most of the time. Surprisingly, Charles Bronson, who plays Villa's right-hand man, is the most entertaining and the best comedian of the three. An entertaining western/war film with some enjoyable performances, staring Robert Mitchum, Yul Brynner and Charles Bronson. Mitchum’s aviator gunrunner gets mixed up in the Mexican revolution. And Brynner’s Pancho Villa , who strongly encourages Mitchum to fly for him. The action is good and sturdy , mixing aerial combat with classic western shoot outs. Watched on Talking Pictures.

It’s a strange film, mainly because the use of Technicolour and Maurice Jarre’s great score make the story feel quite romanticised, which is undermined by the portrayal of the revolutionaries as bloodthirsty and sadistic. This is especially true of Charles Bronson’s character, Villa’s second-in-command, who seems to take delight in toying with and then gunning down enemy soldiers in cold blood. It makes the film feel like a tonal mismatch, as the gleeful violence is really graphic for the time, with nearly every shot fired shown in detail.

The moment the credits started I had a strange feeling that this could have made a great Sam Peckinpah Western and lo and behold his name did indeed show up as one of the script writers.
It appears that he was initially also set to direct but ran into difficulties with Yul Brynner about the portrayal of the real-life Mexican (anti-)hero.
It's easy to see though what may have attracted Peckinpah about this flamboyant and egocentric revolutionary with his own strict sense of rules.
This sprawling epic depicts an episode of the Mexican revolution and stars a strangely toupeed and moustachioed Brynner together with the wonderfully stoic Robert Mitchum, the always watchable Herbert Lom and Charles Bronson as well as a range of other familiar faces even including his future wife Jill Ireland. (They were going to get married later that year.)
I don't think that Villa Rides can be mistaken for a great movie or a terribly important one, but it is interesting to me on a few accounts. It's largely a curiosity of what it could have been. I'm not clear on whether Peckinpah worked with Robert Towne on the script or if Towne revised it after Peckinpah was shown the door (supposedly by Yul Brynner) but since both men were fascinated by violence, it's not surprising that the violence survives in the final product. However, where Peckinpah or Sergio Leone (also rumored to have been offered the director's chair) would have something to say about the violence, Kulik's straightforward direction and the near total lack of political context makes…
