Hearts goalkeeper Craig Gordon aims to force his way back into Steve Clarke's squad and become Scotland's oldest international player.

The 41-year-old has signed a 12-month contract extension to keep him at Hearts until the end of next season.

Gordon, who turns 42 on Hogmanay, has no plans to retire and wants to surpass former defender David Weir's record of playing for Scotland at 40.

"Lots of milestones. Lots to aim for," said Gordon.

"I feel good and happy to extend the contract for another year and still [have] lots to try and achieve. To get back playing, to get back in the Scotland squad, there is plenty to aim for.

"I would be the oldest player to play for Scotland if I get one more cap. I am already Hearts' oldest player so I may as well try to become Scotland's as well."

Gordon has played once - in the Scottish Cup win over Spartans last month - since recovering from a double leg break. He won the last of his 74 caps in 2022 and could yet feature in Clarke's squad for the Euro 2024 finals in Germany.

Scotland were this week drawn with Croatia, Poland and Portugal for the 2024-25 Nations League, which starts in September.

"You see the draw yesterday and the big games coming up so it would be amazing to be part of that," said Gordon.

"It's something that's going to motivate me between now and then to keep going and training hard to be in the best possible shape to be part of that.

"One day [retirement] will [be on my mind] but it's certainly not something at this moment that I am thinking about. My full focus is on preparing to be ready to take on the next opportunity.

"When I feel I am maybe not as good as the lads around me then that will be the time to think about it."
