In 2017, she made many significant cinematic appearances. She portrayed Debora, Baby’s love interest, in Edgar Wright’s action movie Baby Driver.
In Joe Wright’s war drama film Darkest Hour, she portrayed Elizabeth Layton, a secretary to the British prime minister Winston Churchill (played by Gary Oldman).

She also starred in the dramatic World War II movie The Exception as a British agent who pretended to be Kaiser Wilhelm II’s exiled servant.
In the Mamma Mia! sequel, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, James played Donna Sheridan, a younger version of Meryl Streep’s Donna Sheridan.
