A Complete History of Jana Kramer and Mike Caussin's Rollercoaster Relationship Leading Up to Divorce

THE BEGINNING

Kramer, 37, and Caussin, 34, first started dating in August 2014.

Prior to her romance with Caussin, Kramer broke off an engagement with fellow country singer Brantley Gilbert in August 2013.

In 2011, she was briefly wed to actor Johnathon Schaech (after marrying in July 2010, the pair split not long after and finalized their divorce in June 2011). She was also previously married to Michael Gambino in 2004.

TAKING THE NEXT STEP

Just four months after they started dating, Caussin got down on one knee and proposed in December 2014.

"It was a beautiful surprise," Kramer told PEOPLE in a statement at the time. "He was the perfect gentleman. Nervous, on one knee, and surrounded by some of the people that love us the most."

SAYING "I DO"

Kramer and Caussin tied the knot in May 2015 in Charlottesville, Virginia.

EXPANDING THEIR FAMILY

In August 2015, Kramer and Caussin announced they were expecting their first child.

Then in January 2016, they welcomed their daughter, Jolie Rae.

"Words can't even begin to describe how much happiness I'm feeling right now," Kramer told PEOPLE at the time. "Holding my healthy and beautiful baby girl in my arms is something that's truly indescribable. Michael and I are so thankful for this wonderful blessing!"

TAKING TIME APART

In August 2016, the couple announced they were separating as Caussin entered treatment for undisclosed reasons — later revealed to be sex addiction — at a rehabilitation center.

"This has been difficult for Jana but her priority is being there for Jolie," a source close to Kramer told PEOPLE at the time.

In October of that year, Kramer revealed to PEOPLE that they separated because of Caussin's infidelity.

"Mike was the biggest of the betrayals because it was the first time in a relationship where I truly loved the version of me," she said. "I didn't feel I had to prove that I was good enough, I was vulnerable and finally at peace with myself. But I was fooled."

For his part, Caussin told PEOPLE in a statement: "I acknowledge that certain actions and behaviors have caused issues in my marriage and I am deeply sorry for the pain I have caused Jana. I have and will continue to take the steps needed to change who I am as a person in order to be a better husband and father."

In September 2020, Kramer revealed that during this time, Caussin had filed for divorce.

BACK TOGETHER?

During an appearance on Bachelor alum Olivia Caridi's Mouthing Off podcast in September 2017, Kramer said that Caussin was "still my husband, yes."

"Everyone is like, 'Oh, your estranged husband' because we're technically separated,'" she said. "We didn't separate in the court."

After Caussin left rehab, Kramer said they focused on "actively working" through their issues.

"I'm just focusing on our family and trying to figure it out," Kramer said. "It's day-by-day. We're not divorced, he's not my estranged husband, [and] he's very much in my life."

"Legally, he is my husband," she continued. "I have a ring on my finger. It's hard, every day — some days I'm like, 'I can't do this' … But other days I'm like, 'No, fight for it. It's for our family.' Cause I've given up so easily in the past before, so I really want to sit in the trenches and fight for it."

A HEARTBREAKING LOSS

In early December 2017, Kramer revealed on her Instagram that she had a miscarriage.

"I debated posting this for the exact reason why it's a silent struggle," she wrote. "I don't want I'm sorry or sympathy. I just don't want to feel alone. And I know I'm not."

Kramer went on to explain that "this, unfortunately, isn't my first loss."

"When I first found out I was pregnant I wanted to shout it from the rooftop but I know for reasons like this we have to wait," she wrote. "So because we don't tell many, we have to suffer silently...and suffering silently was my thing in the past, but it's not now. For the women out there who have miscarried in the past and need support and a place to grieve their little one lost or to those in the thick of it like me who are currently grieving and in pain, let us all be there for each other."

MAKING IT OFFICIAL

On Dec. 31, 2017, Kramer and Caussin renewed their vows in Hawaii.

"2017……..you broke my heart, you broke me down, you made me question everything, but damn did you make me strong. You taught me patience, you taught me family was everything. You made me believe not only in myself but the power of forgiveness. You turned me into the women I always wanted to be," Kramer wrote on social media at the time, alongside photos of the couple's romantic vow renewal ceremony.

"Here's to always believing in love and fighting for it," she added. "2018, I'm ready for you!"

IN A GOOD PLACE

In May 2018, Kramer celebrated her three-year wedding anniversary to Caussin by penning a sweet post to him on Instagram.

"For better or for worse…. I love you babe…. Happy 3 years ;). #loveispatient #loveiskind #loveforgivesall," Kramer wrote.

RAINBOW BABY

After three miscarriages and two chemical pregnancies, the couple revealed that they were expecting their second child in June 2018.

"Surprise! We have a rainbow baby on the way & couldn't be more excited," Kramer wrote on Instagram. "Jolie is going to be a big sister & we're becoming a family of 4!"

BABY MAKES FOUR

In November 2018, Kramer and Caussin welcomed their second child, a baby boy named Jace Joseph.

"Welcome to the world Jace Joseph Caussin," Kramer said in a statement to PEOPLE at the time. "Our hearts are so full. Thank you to all our friends and family and all of you who have supported Mike and I and our growing family."

Ahead of Jace's birth, Kramer told PEOPLE that her pregnancy had brought her and Caussin closer together.

"Babies and having other kids don't save a marriage but for us, this baby truly has been a savior for us in a way that we've really done our work and gotten dirty," she said. "We're bringing a child into this world [so] we have to be there for each other and continue to do our own recovery work for him and me and be in a place where we're bringing [our son] into the best environment possible."

ANOTHER BUMP IN THE ROAD

During an October 2019 episode of their podcast Whine Down with Jana Kramer and Mike Caussin, the pair opened up about an incident involving the singer going through Caussin's Apple Watch and finding a topless woman's photo that he had deleted from his phone without informing his wife.

"I see it and I know the right thing to do is to go get Jana, pull her aside and say, 'Hey. I just received this. I don't know what the hell it is but I just need you to know.' I was terrified to do so," Caussin recalled.

"Jana and I have had a really good run recently, like not a lot of past stuff coming up, we've been handling situations pretty well, handling triggers pretty well, talking things out," he added. "It really felt like we were really building a lot of forward momentum."

However, not telling his wife backfired.

"When I looked, I was like, 'Goddamnit.' I saw it and my heart just fell. It's here. It's happened again," Kramer said. "I'm such an f—ing idiot, and I immediately called my best friend and I was just shaking crying outside."

In the end, Caussin apologized to his wife on-air. "I am sorry honey that I didn't handle it the way that we agreed upon. I didn't handle it the right way for myself, for you, for both of us," he said.

MOVING FORWARD

Later in October 2019, the couple said during an appearance on the Tamron Hall Show that they had since moved on from the photo scandal.

"I trust him today," Kramer said. "And that's what I always say. I can't think about yesterday or the day before or the past because that's mucky. But today, he's showing up, he's a great husband, he's a great dad today, and today I trust him."

SHARING THEIR STORY

The couple marked their fifth wedding anniversary in May 2020 by announcing the release of their relationship self-help book The Good Fight.

"We're not trying to claim that we have it all figured out," Caussin told PEOPLE. "We learned from clinical professionals that we've had in our lives steer us in the right direction. We have the tools. [The book] is vulnerable, it's authentic, it's direct, it's funny, it's passionate."

Kramer added: "I never thought that we'd be here, to be totally honest. The last five years has been just a lot of freakin' work, and I truly hope the next five will be easier because of the tools that we have."

A SHOCKING DM

During a September 2020 episode of their Whine Down podcast, Kramer revealed that someone had reached out to her via direct message on social media to tell her that their friend had had a romantic tryst with Caussin.

"A few days ago, I got a DM saying that Mike cheated," Kramer said. "And the reason why it caught me off guard was because the very first time I found out Mike cheated on me was through a DM."

Kramer "sat with it for a few days before bringing it to Mike," who had noticed something was up with his wife.

"Once she finally told me, it crushed me, because it sucks," Caussin recalled. "I feel the same as her ... it sucks that she can't default to trusting me. It sucks that I've done what I've done in the past to create that in a relationship right now. My hope is that years down the line, if something like this happened again, she'd be able to bring it to me and we'd almost be able to laugh about it because there is that much trust in the bank."

FEELING STRAINED

In March, Kramer shared a photo of herself crying to Instagram. In the caption, she revealed that the snap had been taken "a few weeks" prior in Canada after an argument she had with Caussin.

"Nothing is perfect," Kramer wrote. "I took this picture to almost remind myself that even though in the moment it seems like everything is doomed it's not."

"No relationship is perfect and when blow ups or fights happen sometimes we believe it's done and over but really it's a moment for growth and more understanding and to lean into your partner," she added.

During an episode of their Whine Down podcast, the couple revealed that things had started to come to a head between them in Canada while Kramer filmed her upcoming new movie and Caussin took care of their kids.

After a busy work week, Caussin said that he and Kramer "didn't always get along" by the time the weekend came, and "that was tough."

Kramer recalled one fight in particular in which "mean words" were said. "It's been a long time since I've used mean words and gotten mean like that, and it sucks," Caussin said.

"The words are what have stayed with me and you don't mean those, but they are the worst things that stay with someone," Kramer said. "I said mean things but you cut deep … I'm like high school mean. You're like [X-rated] mean. Neither are right."

OFFICIALLY CALLING IT QUITS

On Wednesday, Kramer officially filed for divorce from Caussin after he was again unfaithful.

"He cheated and broke her trust again," a source tells PEOPLE. "After fighting for the marriage for so long, she's come to terms with the realization that his patterns were never going to change. The focus now is on their kids."

On Instagram, Kramer alluded to the end of her marriage, writing, "It's time."

"Please know that I still believe whole heartedly in marriage, love, and rebuilding," she added. "I just can't fight any longer. It's time to heal. Thank you for all the love, heart, and support, in many ways you have fought on this journey along side me, and for that I am grateful. I'll always encourage you to continue the good fight, but you can't fight it alone."
