Diverse Yusef Lateef/Suite 16

CD (Item 634451) Atlantic/Rhino, 1970 — Condition: Used
Out Of Stock

CD

✈
2 of Yusef Lateef's best Atlantic albums – back to back on one CD! The records really go all-out to show the full scope of Yusef's talents – and feature some stripped-down tracks that hit a really nice funky groove, plus others that take on a more ambitious approach, but still come across with a heck of a lot of soul! The Sweet Inspirations sing backing vocals on a few tracks, and the enigmatic William S Fischer handles the arrangements on a few others – making for a style that's got some nice exotic touches from time to time, but which also snakes along in a spiritually soulful mode. Titles include "Live Humble", "Eboness", "Chandra", "A Long Time Ago", "Down In Atlanta", "Nocturne", "Buddy & Lou", and "Symphonic Blues Suite".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

Incredible early work from Yusef Lateef – some of his best! On these early Savoy side, Lateef is drawing from the wealth of influences that were running through the Detroit jazz underground of the 50s that spawned him – and apart from a strongly-conceived bop-influenced sound, you'll ... CD
Impulse, 1964. Used
One of the greatest albums ever recorded by the mighty Yusef Lateef – and that's really saying a lot, given his fantastic legacy of albums! The set's a live one, which is a bit unusual in Lateef's catalog at this time – and the concert setting is perhaps a window onto some of his more ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1966. Used
A heck of a great little record – one that shouldn't work so well, but it does! For the set, Sonny Stitt's blowing in front of a larger brass section – and while the prospect of a Sonny Stitt big band record might not sound that great at first, this one really kicks, largely because of ... CD

Mindif
Enja/Rhino, 1988. Used
A great set that features Abdullah Ibrahim's soundtrack music for the 1988 Clair Denis film Chocolat – some of his best group recordings of the 80s! The feel here is a bit more African-styled than usual – even for Ibrahim – with strong use of reeds to inflect the tunes with the ... CD

Robin Kenyatta

Gypsy Man
Atlantic/Wounded Bird, 1973. Used
Sweet electric funk from Robin Kenyatta – but a set with some slightly complicated moments too! The album's a bit like some of Yusef Lateef's more electric moments on Atlantic, although probably not as cerebral overall – and Robin plays a range of reeds, including alto, flute, and ... CD

Reissue of two of Art Farmer's beautiful albums for Atlantic from the mid 60s! Both records have Farmer playing with modernist-oriented backing – one group is Jim Hall, Steve Swallow, and Walter Perkins; the other is Swallow, Steve Kuhn, and Pete LaRoca. As could be expected, these players ... CD

Shelly Manne & His Men

Jazz Gunn
Atlantic (Japan), 1967. Used
Shelly Manne scored big with a jazz version of the Peter Gunn soundtrack in the 50s – and he does it again in this 60s version of Henry Mancini's music for the full-length Gunn movie! The style here is a bit more far-reaching and looser than before – showing not just Manne's ... CD

Shelly Manne

Boss Sounds!
Atlantic (Japan), 1966. Used
One of Shelly Manne's best records of the 60s – largely because the group's so great! Altoist Frank Strozier was playing with Shelly at the time, and his rich talents on the alto make the record almost worth seeking out for him alone – because here, Strozier's opening up his sound a ... CD
