Had this on audio tape when it first came out, hadn't listened to the album in ages. Buying this on CD was something I should have done years ago and it did not disappoint ^_^ Fantastic album!

This year marks the 30th anniversary that I'm Breathless was released, and having the yellow vinyl is one to add to your collection!
First, I want to say that I'm Breathless (Music from and Inspired by the film Dick Tracy) is NOT a soundtrack!! Dick Tracy has its own soundtrack and score which you can order separately. I'm not sure how her fifth studio album got classified as a soundtrack, but again it's not! I remember as a kid saving my money and rushing out and buying this amazing record on May 22, 1990. I remember listening to the countdown at the time and them specifically saying "Madonna's Fifth Studio Album"!!
Second, the songs featured on her fifth studio album aren't the typical Nineties songs that were played at the time. "Keep it Together" was the last single from Like a Prayer, released the year before, and the last single hit radio in early 1990. Madonna worked with Shep Pettibone, and came up with "Vogue" the first single from I'm Breathless. Originally, it was meant to be the B side to the single "Keep it Together", however, everyone loved the song so much it got its own release and dominated the number 1 spot around the world in June 1990. The second single taken from I'm Breathless was "Hanky Panky", which became a top 10 smash in August 1990. The song talks about a little spanky whilst having some hanky panky. Most people don't know this, but two more singles were planned to be released from I'm Breathless, and they were "Sooner or Later" the soft ballad Madonna performed at the 1991 Oscars, and "Now I'm Following You". The later had already been remixed as parts 1 and 2 on the album and it was featured in the movie by a different singer. These singles were scrapped due to the fact that Madonna had started working on her first greatest hits compilation, The Immaculate Collection, and that will turn 30 this November 2020. There were only three songs from her fifth studio album featured in the film, and they are "Sooner or Later", "More", and "What can you Lose" which was a duet with the piano player in the film Mandy Patinkin.
Finally, I would like to say this is a must have for the true Madonna fan!! I became a fan with this record, and was the first Madonna record I bought when it came out! Each song has that 40s jazzy big band vibe except "Vogue", which was a good way to end the record, and the ballad "Something to Remember". "Something to Remember" was included on her ballads collection five years later in 1995. Madonna used that song as the title to that album. My favourites from the album are "Vogue", "Back in Business", "He's a Man", and "I'm going Bananas"!!

Sometimes this turns boring or maked you feel in a bad comedy but overall it's something extra and different on Madonna's catalogue.

I got this CD recently to complete my Madonna collection. I wasn't expecting a lot from it but I was pleasantly surprised to find this was amazingly good! It's different from her other albums. Madonna takes on a more 1930s/1940s sound that went with her character in the movie Dick Tracy. What I think is best about this album is that it showcases Madonna's range. She's able to take on an upbeat song like "Vogue" while playing a sultry temptress with "He's a Man." There really isn't a track I would feel like skipping but some of the highlights-
1- "He's a Man" The song starts off slowly and builds up as it goes on. Madonna pushes her vocal register, really digging for the low notes and making it all come off as sounding powerful and alluring. One of the best Madonna songs period.
2- "Now I'm Following You" Part I is a simple little song that has Madonna singing a duo with another male. It has a classic sound to it. Then Part II is the more upbeat version of it, sort of a remix shall we say. It has a funkier beat and sound clips mixed in from other songs and from her character's role in the movie. A nice song overall.
3- "Vogue" - It's her hit song, what else needs to be said?
4- "Something to Remember" A song that simply hinges on emotions. It has a piano background with a few other instruments now and then. Her voice is heavy and it's rather simplistic but that gives it it's strength. She sings a song of gratitude sort of to someone she once loved but lost for whatever reason. Madonna convinces you the listener that this is something that really could have happened.
5 - "Back in Business" Sounds rather big-band. This song's strength comes in its lyrics. Only the chorus part is loud and full of energy. The rest of the song is kept together by a steady beat that's rather quiet while Madonna's voice goes over and keeps your attention.
There are other good songs here. "Hanky Panky" was released as a single (the second and last of this album) and goes along with Madonna's Sex-era. It's rather naughty and risque but fun. Not her best but entertaining. "More" and "Crybaby" sound very Broadway to me. Sound-wise, it could easily come from a musical such as "Chicago." While I've never been too much impressed by the movie, I think this album is among Madonna's best work. While it's counted as a soundtrack sense it includes the musical numbers from the movie, it's more like a simple Madonna CD done in a different style and mindset. Definately worth your money and time.
