Kim Sill (born Kimberly Dawn Stevens on March 26, 1961 in Louisville, Kentucky) is an actress, film maker and animal rights activist.
Biography[edit]
Kim Sill was born Kimberly Dawn Stevens on March 26, 1961 in Louisville, Kentucky to Joan and David Stevens. She is an actress, film maker and animal rights activist[1]currently residing in the Los Angeles area. Sill's film credits include Bad Blood (1994), Lap Dancing (1995) and Carnal Fate (1998), a film she starred in and also wrote and produced under her own label, Working Actress Productions. She has been married to music supervisor Joel Sill since 2001.[2]
Animal rescue[edit]
After her sister was killed in a domestic violence incident, Sill decided that she needed to do something with her life that would make a difference so in 2001, she retired from acting and began working in the world of animal rescue.[3][4] Sill protested puppy mill pet shops all over Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, Malibu and the valley from 2008 to 2010. Sill also founded a group called D Cups Saving Tea Cups, which was a group of dedicated women who were active in dog rescue and eliminating puppy mills around California. During this time, Sill began filming puppy mills and eventually sent the footage to the producers of the Dog Whisperer which resulted in an hour long show about puppy mills.[5][6] She also guest starred in an episode of Caesar Millan's show, The Dog Whisperer.[7] Sill filmed her journey while undercover in puppy mills located in the Little Rock area of California. She worked undercover with an animal rights group called Last Chance for Animals.[8]
Sill started The Shelter Hope Project, a comprehensive shelter support program transferring dogs from overcrowded, high-kill shelters to locations throughout the Western states where they are adopted into permanent, loving homes. Sill opened the Shelter Hope Pet Shop at the Janss Marketplace in Thousand Oaks in an effort to compete with the puppy mill pet shops. Over ten thousand dogs and cats have been saved at Shelter Hope Pet Shop in Thousand Oaks. There are currently two other Shelter Hopes, one in Santa Clarita and one in Sacramento.[9][10]
In 2015, Sill made a film called Saved In America, the story of Sill's experience rescuing animals.[11] Through her efforts and others, California became the first state in the nation to ban the sale of mass-produced dogs for sale. Several celebrities appear in Saved In America including Pink, Cesar Millan, Dr. Phil, Kim Kardashian, and Katherine Heigl, with music by Diane Warren and Dave Grusin.[12] [13] During Covid, Shelter Hope has been providing assistance in the community by walking dogs for people, dropping off food and supplies and the occasional grocery store shopping.[14][15][16] They also took on caring for animals of families evacuated during the Woolsey fire.[17][18][19]
