Product Description
The 1979 comeback album.

The key to Roxy Music's success is that from the start they were grown men playing rock & roll. Coming to stardom in his late 20s, Bryan Ferry had the knowledge and experience to invest his songs with novelty and depraved intelligence, but was sufficiently new to the whole thing that Roxy always sounded fresh. When they started getting on each others' nerves, they had the presence of mind to split up for a while, and reform when they felt like it--the result was Manifesto, a unique, compelling record that could well be their best album. Informed by the rhythms and radiance of disco, with a vicious edge that recalls their early recordings, and the effortless fluidity of Avalon and Flesh & Blood, it's the consummate Roxy record. The singles--"Dance Away", "Trash" and "Angel Eyes"--showcase the album's range, spanning saxophone suavity, fractious rock and hypnotic, disorientating disco. But the real jewel is the title track, a taut tapestry of rhythm and noise that they never topped. --Taylor Parkes

Hardly as dynamic and groundbreaking as FOR YOUR PLEASURE or SIREN, nor as heartbreaking and sensual as AVALON, MANIFESTO finds Ferry and company, together again after a four-year hiatus, trying to find a new direction. If their attempts are in vain here, they got it the following year with the excellent FLESH & BLOOD.
The title track here is bold, swaggering and builds to an excellent climax. It proved to be an ideal song to open their concerts with.
ANGEL EYES has slowly grown on me over the years, though it's by no means a ROXY MUSIC classic.
DANCE AWAY, however, is. It's a simple, infectious and heartbreaking ballad that shows why Ferry was oh-so-good at writing these types of songs and why his songwriting style and personal style inspired a whole onslaught of clones in the years to follow.
Sadly, after these three songs, there isn't a whole lot to enjoy here. AIN'T THAT SO and TRASH rank as some of the weakest ROXY MUSIC songs ever recorded. Only the mediocre ballad that closes the album is close to being decent.
In short, one shouldn't skip over MANIFESTO entirely. Just don't expect to be blown away. Stick with FOR YOUR PLEASURE, SIREN and AVALON for that.
And that's too bad, for 'Manifesto' is neither as slick as what would follow or as groundbreaking as what came before. This is understandable, of course, when you realize that this is actually the second manifestation of Roxy, coming four years (and many solo records) after 'Siren.' That said, the first half picks up pretty well from that masterpiece, opening with the minor-chord bass chops of the title track, taking you down the fifties glam lane of "Trash" (which almost sounds like an outtake of their first album) the catchy, wonderful "Angel Eyes" and then the slow-downs of the last two songs. As tends to be the case with Roxy albums, the second side doesn't quite match up, seeming a bit slick at times, but never banal like 'Flesh + Blood.' Plus, Ferry ends the record with "Spin Me Round," one of his most elegant odes.
Much has also been made about Roxy Music becoming little more than a glorified Bryan Ferry backing band with this album, but I would disagree. Both Phil Manzanera and Andy Mackey more than earn their billing, and the album is edgier as a whole than Ferry's solo releases of the time. In short, 'Manifesto' may not be the best (or the worst) Roxy album, but it is worth a spin. A terrific collection deserving of a better place in the Roxy canon.

Seit "Siren" waren vier Jahre vergangen.
