The Man in the Iron Mask

      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Leonardo DiCaprio plays dual roles with diminishing returns in The Man in the Iron Mask, a cheesy rendition of the Musketeers' epilogue that bears all the pageantry of Alexandre Dumas' text, but none of its romantic panache.

Sara Michelle Fetters MovieFreak.com [There's] just too much great stuff here for this version of the Dumas story to be summarily dismissed. Blu B I wanted to find a reason to give it a 3.5 but I just couldn't. Pacing wise it's messy out the gate and very jumbled, than settles and gets kind of boring but makes sense and picks up in the last 20 minutes or so for a decent ending. It's decent overall in the dept. This defintely could've had 20, maybe 25 minutes knocked off and really not lost much. Music for most of the runtime is very boring and feels like it's the same generic violin score for 85% of the runtime. It does get better in the end though and is more memorable. Everything else though is just ok. Leo plays a very ambitious role here but despite coming off a career performance a year ago, it feels like the role is too big for his britches. He doesn't come across as intimdating but more whiny as the young king. It's still passable overall but a letdown as it doesn't come close too something like Christopher Reeve/Jeff Daniels playing dual roles. J.M. is solid and the best thing in this, whenever he speaks he stands out. Everyone else including the other musketeers jus all blend in which is crazy given the talent. The love interests aren't that memorable either. This has massive production value which is all top notch but the camera work and direction in general is just nothing special. The comedic relief scenes are so stupid and out of place for the material as well. Fart jokes and all. The editing is sooo jumpy for most of the runtime as well. The love interests, comedic relief, on top of it feeling very unfocused all contribute to it being very hard to develop any kind of connection with anyone. This needed to focus on just the core trading places plot and maybe give a bit more background at first on the three musketeers which this doesn't. It automatically assumes you already know the legend and mythos before watching which threw me off. Once it does settle on the core trading places plot though it builds some momentum and the ending is the best part. This just needed better direction, slimmed down on the side plots, and maybe a older more mature actor than Leo. Anyone who is a die hard Leo fan or Three Musketeers fan may want to check this out but most people should skip this. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/22/24 Full Review Sai M Man in the Iron Mask has a magical cast and is a movie filled with passion, romance, intrigue, suspense and plenty of actionable drama! I loved it when I saw it as teenager but every once in a while I will revisit it. This is not because of an obsessive love of Leonardo DiCaprio but rather a love of the story and the beautiful casting choices for the Three Musketeers. I am a fan of many renditions of the Musketeers story, but I think this movie captures the essence of each of their personalities with grandeur and finesse unseen in anything else cinematically. John Malkovich, Jeremy Irons, Gerard Depardieu and Gabriel Byrne are phenomenal in their respective roles and I think this movie is one of the top fictional history movies of the 90s. Still enjoyable over twenty years later. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/15/24 Full Review Jason T Entertaining, with a great cast, brilliant soundtrack and powerful storyline. A must see for anyone that is interested in this popular tale. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/29/24 Full Review Bobby C This movie is so much fun! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/29/24 Full Review Kenyon T I don't care what critics say. This has become my favorite movie. The score alone is worth 5 stars. The cast is perfection. Is the film perfect? No. But I love it. It's my go to. Even all the years later. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/28/23 Full Review Migdalia T This is a good movie, it deserves way more stars than this platform gives it.
