Lesson 3: The Characteristics of a Good school as

an Agent of Change

LEARNING OUTCOMES

 Identify and explain the characteristics of a good school as an agent of change

 Discus the indicators of a good school from six composite perspectives

 Discuss the responsibility of the school in responding to the needs of the country and the local community

 Derive values from the lesson

 Examine one’s own school on its program that is beneficial to the community

There are six indicators of an effective school based on the study of MacBeath, et. (1995) that were also affirmed by Sergiovanni (2000):

INDICATORS OF A GOOD SCHOOL FROM SIX COMPOSITE

PERSPECTIVES

PUPIL

  1. Pupils are nice to each other

  2. Everyone is treated fairly

  3. there is a friendly atmosphere

  4. Teachers control the classes but are not too strict

  5. Teachers help you with things you are not good at.

TEACHER

  1. Communication is good among all members
  2. staff development is good
  3. The environment is good to work in
  4. Pupils are happy and well motivated
  5. All pupils are helped to achieve what they are capable of.

PARENT

  1. There is a welcoming friendly atmosphere

  2. Staff are caring and communicate well with pupils

  3. Discipline is good

  4. Extra time is spent with children who learn less quickly

  5. relationships are good between teachers and parents

MANAGEMENT

  1. Pupils are safe
  2. all members of the school community work toward clear
  3. objectives
  4. A high quality of information is given to parents and visitors
  5. Rules are applied evenly and fairly
  6. All pupils are helped to achieve what they are capable of

SUPPORT STAFF

  1. Resources are good and up to date
  2. Classrooms are clean, warm, and comfortable
  3. Support staff are given credit for their competence and contribution
  4. The environment is friendly and welcoming
  5. staff development involves all staff

BOARD MEMBER, TRUSTEE

  1. Excellent reputation with the local community
  2. Strong leadership from senior management
  3. A happy and welcoming environment
  4. Pupils are being helped to reach their individual potential
  5. A safe place for pupils

CHARACTERISTICS OF A GOOD SCHOOL AS AN AGENT OF CHANGE

  1. A good school visibly and substantively improves the community it is embedded within.

  2. A good school adapts quickly to social change.

  3. A good school uses every resource, advantage, gift, and the opportunity it has to grow students and tends to see more resources, advantages, gifts, and opportunities than lower- performing schools.

  4. A good school is disruptive of bad cultural practices. These include intolerance based on race, income, faith, sexual preference, aliteracy, and apathy toward the environment. 2222.

Lesson 4: Roles of Administrators, Teachers, and Students in Promoting schools as Agents of Social changes and Transformation

LEARNING OUTCOMES

 Identify and explain the roles of administrators as an agent of social change and transformation

 Identify and explain the roles of teachers and students as agents of social change

 Discuss strategies for making changes

 Derive values from the lesson

 Develop a program that will bring positive changes to the school

STRATEGIES THAT LEADERS IN SCHOOLS COULD DO TO BE

EFFECTIVE

IN COMPLEX TIMES

  1. Educational leaders must be guided by moral purpose

  2. It is essential for leaders to understand the change process

  3. It is essential to build the relationship

  4. Leaders must commit to knowledge creation and sharing

  5. Effective leaders seek coherence in everything they do.

OTHER STRATEGIES THAT ADMINISTRATORS, TEACHERS AND

OTHER PERSONNEL CAN DO TO ENSURE THE SUCCESS OF THE

SCHOOL

  1. Strong principal leadership

  2. Setting high expectations for students’ achievement

  5. Monitoring student’s progress and teacher’s performance

  6. Establishing a school climate
