Suggest a destination

We are planning a first-time trip to Japan with 4 days in Tokyo and 5 days in Kyoto, departing from Osaka after a one-day stay there. We have 5 days in between and enjoy nature, mountains, good food, local culture, and a serene atmosphere. We would like to stay in an onsen ryokan for one or two days. We are unsure about Kanazawa, Takayama, or other destinations that would suit our interests. Please recommend where to spend the remaining 5 days, as well as a good onsen ryokan within a budget of fifty thousand yen per day. I had considered Honjin Hiranoya Kachoan in Takayama, but the TripAdvisor reviews were not very positive. We are open to any recommendations and will be using public transport for our travels.

I was on a tour, so cannot help much with transportation suggestions ( except to say I was able to figure out a few trains on my own in my free time!), but we stayed at Hotel Wood Takayama, via Kanazawa from Kyoto. It was very nice, a traditional type hotel with a futon. They had onsen on-site. Traditional Japanese breakfast. Fantastic staff.

Lovely town, lots to see and eat in the immediate area but I don't believe it is necessarily "central" . We took a day trip to Ogimachi, it was fantastic! Old wooden buildings, we still had snow on the ground but photos show how gorgeous is anytime of the year. The drive was pretty, this area is refereed to as the "Japanese Alps." I did note signage offering day tours from Takayama, so I believe getting there should be easy enough. Have fun, I cannot wait to go back!

Edit: the onsen at the hotel was pretty basic, not fancy. I don't know if you are looking for some kind of more elevated experience. I did just pop onto their website and see they have day tour options listed, so they may be a good resource for some ideas and/,or assistance!

Thank you Javajana. We are considering skipping Hiroshima, originally in our plan, and spending 2 days in Takayama and 2 days in Kanazawa instead, or choosing a more relaxed destination. Since we will be spending more time in cities like Tokyo and Kyoto, we are seeking to explore quieter towns and villages that offer distinct experiences. Our day trips from Kyoto will include Nara, Hiroshima, and Miyajima, while we plan to see Mt. Fuji from Tokyo. How should we plan these 5 days presently unplanned?

nice to know you are coming to Kyoto . Kyoto is a city for enjoying nature, mountains, good food, local culture, and a serene atmosphere. However, Kyoto is not Onsen town even though we have several onsen ryokans and hotels. Why dont you add Hakone? Hakone is a tourist friendly onsen town many people stay nice onsen ryokans for one or two days.

Thank you Kohji. I have no dietary restrictions. I had thought about visiting Hakone. My itinerary includes staying 2 nights in Hakone and 2 nights in Kanazawa before heading to Osaka a day before departure. Could you recommend some upscale hotels in Kyoto within a budget of around fifty thousand yen per day? In Hakone or Kanazawa, we are looking to stay at an onsen ryokan. Can you advise on which location would be better for a ryokan?

Edit: we intend to visit Kyoto after Kanazawa, spend four days there, then spend one day in Osaka before departing. In this way, I hope to experience both the vibrant city life and the peaceful rural areas. Should I skip Kanazawa and instead plan to visit a ski resort nearby for two days?

Kanazawa is not a rural city as far as I know.

Have you ever tried Japanese cuisine before? Most of them won’t be spicy at all.

Global, I have sampled Japanese cuisine at restaurants in India and Europe. I particularly enjoy Sushi and ramen. I am excited to try authentic Japanese food in Japan. Can you recommend a location, other than Kanazawa, that is quiet and laid-back yet offers a rich cultural experience?

The combination of Takayama, Shirakawago and Kanazawa is fits your window perfectly. While Kanazawa is a proper city, the vibe is nothing like that of the mega cities like Tokyo and Osaka. There will be many cultural places see and activities to participate if interested.
