How to Choose the Best Earrings For Your Face Shape and More!

Kris Kardashian - Best Earrings For Your Face Shape

Dear Deborah,

I’ve found that earrings are a great way to add some life to my wardrobe, but there are so many out there, that I have no idea what kind to buy. Can you give me some tips on what’s out there,  what’s in style, and the best earrings for your face shape? Anne — Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Hi Anne,

You’re right! Earrings are a wonderful way to perk up your face and make you look classy and fabulous after 40. But be careful you don’t make the mistake of wearing earrings that are “in style” but don’t really suit you. There are many things to consider when choosing the right pair.  Here are five tips for getting it right.

1. Match Your Earrings to Your Face Shape

Earrings can make your face look wide, thin, long, or fat depending on your face shape.

Best earrings for your face shape

Choose your face shape here and then check what shape earrings are best for you.

Inverted Triangle Shaped Face

If your forehead is the widest part of your face, tapering down to a narrower, pointy chin, you have an inverted triangle face shape. This shape is similar to a heart-shaped face, but the difference is that the heart shape is shorter and there is usually a widow’s peak.

To balance the inverted triangle-shaped face shape, choose earrings that de-emphasize the wide forehead, and create the illusion of width at the jawline. Chandelier or teardrop earrings work well.

Oval Face

Is your face oval like an egg? You can wear almost any shape, but triangular earrings or simple studs will show off your lovely cheekbones best!

Round Face

If your face is circular, meaning widest at the cheekbones with no taper to the chin, then you have a round face.

Drop or dangle earrings will elongate your face and make it look slimmer. Avoid large circular earrings, hoops, and button studs that only emphasize the roundness. Also, stay away from drop earrings with a dangling round disc. The roundness will only make your face look rounder

Heart-Shaped Face

If your forehead is wider than your cheeks and the lower half of your face narrows like a heart then you have a heart-shaped face.

In this case, you need to counterbalance your sharp chin with chandelier or teardrop earrings. Earrings that are wider at the bottom than the top help fill in the lower portion of your face, so your face is more balanced.

Long and Narrow Face

If you have a long, thin face choose earrings that emphasize the width of your face.

Studs, clustered earrings, short dangles, hoops in a medium to large size. Any time of round earrings will widen your face, and make it look fuller.

Square Face

Gals with wide square jaws ( forehead and jawline are similar widths) need to soften the hard edges of their face.

To do this, go for earrings that are medium to long with rounded edges. Oval shapes soften things up, and circular earrings and hoop earrings work well too. Stay away from square studs or an earring with a square as it only reinforces the squareness.

Other things to remember when choosing earrings……….

2. Match Your Bone Structure to Your Earrings

The bone structure will determine the size and weight of the earrings you will look best in.

Small, fine bone structure: (Meryl Streep/Sharon Stone/Jodi Foster ) Choose earrings that are thin, fine, flat, and delicate. Imagine someone with a fine bone structure like Sharon Stone in chunky wooden hoops. They would overpower her gentle beauty.

Medium Bone Structure: ( Teri Hatcher, Madonna, Liz Hurley) Opt for medium weight and size earrings.

Large Bone Structure:(Oprah, Donatella Versace) You can carry off medium to large, heavy, chunky earrings. Other things to consider when buying earrings…

3. Wear Earrings that Suit Your Lifestyle

Where will you be wearing the earrings?
Work or Office: The more conservative the office, the more conservative the earring.  Choose classic styles in gold for the most authority. Executive dressing means no dangly or hoop earrings.  Avoid large earrings if you are in very traditional, conservative fields like finance and law.

After Work: Now’s the time to loosen up and show your personality. You can forget the simple studs and have some fun.

4. Select Earrings in Tune with Your Style Personality

What’s your Style of Personality?

Are you the romantic type who enjoys pretty feminine clothes? Choose earrings with rounded and curvy details.

If you are the Artsy/creative type, some dangle suits you, and you can wear color well.

Classic types – simple, timeless styles such as small hoops, button earrings in gold and silver, and diamond studs work.

Natural types – wear small and simple, so you barely notice them. Nothing too shiny or detailed.

5. Match Earrings To Your  Coloring

What season are you?

If you have warm undertones in your skin (yellow or peach), that means you are a spring or autumn and look best wearing gold and copper metals.

If you have pink or blue undertones in your skin, then you are winter or summer. Silver and pewter make you look fabulous.

  1. It is hard to find the right earrings according to your face shape, but after reading your blog, it seems too simple. Thank you for sharing this blog!

  2. I think one hole in each year is more classy. 2 holes, to my eye, messy things up a bit. Just my thoughts.

  3. I’m considering having my ears pierced with a second hole on each lobe so I can wear my diamond hoops and my diamond studs. Thoughts?

  4. I used to wear hoops when I was younger but I am getting close to 40 and hoops make me feel self-conscious. I am not sure what I should wear for my age now.

  5. My sister’s birthday is coming up in two weeks and I want to get her a pair of earrings as a gift. I appreciate how you stated the importance of matching the earrings to your personality and style. My sister is very artsy, so I will find a shop that sells colorful dangle earrings as you suggested.

  6. Thanks for sharing this, I actually did match with dangles even before I saw this article, and I am a pretty creative person, so yeah, Thanks for the article.

  7. Thanks for explaining that those with warm undertones in their skin will look good wearing gold or copper jewelry. I was thinking about buying some seashell pendant jewelry because I think it would help show my personality and style when I start my new job later this month. I’ll be sure to keep your tips in mind to help me find jewelry that’ll complement my natural look!

  8. I’ve been thinking of buying a pair of earrings for my sister at a jewelry store. Thanks for your buying guide. It really helped me narrow down my choices. Since my sister has a small and fine bone structure, I’ll purchase earrings that are thin, fine, flat, and delicate, as you suggested.

  9. Thanks for your tips on choosing the best earrings for my face shape! I have a square face and I agree with what you said that I need to wear earrings that would soften the hard edges on my face. With that, I will take your advice on buying ones that are medium to long with rounded edges. I actually have something in mind that I think suits me, and that is Gold Snake Hoop Earring. I hope it would look good on me since I’ll be wearing it at my dear friend Shelly’s birthday next week.

  10. Very Interesting article. Now, I purchased one set of earrings for my girlfriend after analyzing her face and also sent the link to this blog post to her.

  11. My face is petite and oval in shape. I usually wear studs as most others seem too big. Any suggestions?

    1. Hi Joanna, if your face is petite and fine, then stick to a smaller, finer earring. Since it is oval, you are one of the lucky ones and can pretty wear away with any shape. I suspect you are just not used to seeing yourself in different shapes. You may find studs look better on you if you are a gal who appreciates more traditional styles. Why not try a new shape, but keep the earring small and fine. Sometimes it takes a while to get used to something new. Cheers, Deb

  12. I really can’t disagree more…

The fact that all of the choices above seem to focus on “balancing” facial features rather than accentuating and embracing what you do have, just seems like a sure-fire way to make sure your look remains timelessly forgettable.

Heidi Klum’s featured teal earrings do well to bring out the lighter tone in her hair but they throw her color scheme way out of balance. The cool green color makes her face look very pink in comparison, blending right into her peach-colored shirt. Deborah Messing’s Gold and Amber earrings may highlight her auburn hair but they also exaggerate the warmth of her skin, mismatched with blue eyeshadow and clumpy mascara like some kind of party clown.

  13. I have always been confused looking for jewelry. I am more into silver but these days gold is in trend. I am dusky in color. Could you suggest something? What should I choose… what I think I am comfortable in, or the style which is the trend?

  14. I recently just got my ears pierced for the first time, and I am wanting to make sure that I get earrings that will compliment the way I look. It’s good to know that when it comes to having a heart-shaped face that having chandelier or teardrop style ones might be the best look for me. This is something that I will have to try so that I can get ones that will work for me.

  15. Yes, definitely a face shape is very important when choosing an earring. Thanks for sharing this amazing post. Do you think that face & earring combinations are helpful in the office as well? Generally, in offices, it is not good to wear long circular earrings. Most women love to wear stud earrings in offices.

  16. The perfect pair of earrings can add finishing touch to any outfit, western or ethnic. There are a variety of fashion earrings that go with different outfits and face shape. If you want to stand out of the crowd, you have to choose the best earrings that not only matches your outfit but also looks gorgeous on your face.

  17. That is interesting that heart shaped faces should wear something that counterbalances your sharp chin. My mom has a face like this and I was looking at some pretty nice sports earrings to buy her. I want to get her something that will compliment her face. This has helped a lot! Are studs okay for all face shapes?

  18. I am about to get my ears pierced for the first time and get my first few pairs of earrings as well. However, I have a round face and so I haven’t been too sure what type would go best with me up until now. I really like the idea of using dangle earrings to make my face look slimmer, because that is definitely the look that I would want to go for!

    1. I agree. I always wear glasses and have an oblong face, so I choose small studs. Small hoops work well, too. Thanks for sharing.

  19. Hi Pam,
That is good point you make. Also you want to make sure that the “tone” of the jewelry matches the outfit. For example, a casual look goes with casual earrings.

  20. The other thing you need to keep in mind when selecting earrings is the type of neckline you will be wearing. Being a jewelry freak, I pick out my earring first and then dressed around them. I’m not kidding.

  21. Very interesting post. You’ve just made earring selection MUCH easier. While I’m pretty sure (I haven’t checked yet) that all the earrings I own look good on me, I have a wide variety. So, sometimes, when I’m feeling vulnerable and the Right Earrings feel Extremely Important, I’ll vacillate between 2 or 3 pairs. You’ve saved me time and emotional energy. Thanks.

Interestingly, my most recent article posted to my website and various directories was about jewelry, as well: Use jewelry to support your feng shui intentions! If you’re curious:

    1. Hi Kathleen,
I’m glad that you liked the post! I went to your site and think your test on Feng Shui is really fun!
Welcome and hope to hear back from you soon!
      Cheers! Deborah

  22. Re Oval face and short neck, I agree with Deborah. Try some length for earrings. Look for earrings that have the attention at the lobe and then a dangle rather than the punch of attention at the bottom of the dangle.

  23. Thanks for the great tips! I have an oval face but I tend to stick to studs or very short dangling earrings because I have a short neck. Am I too conservative? Can I get away with pretty dangly earrings?
    Thanks!
    Hautblossom

    1. Long earrings will lengthen a long face and if you have a short neck make your neck look shorter, so it sounds like you are on the right track generally. However, life is not about looking perfect!!! Looking perfect is boring.

If you you see a pair of longish earrings that you just adore because they are just “so you”,… or, that for example, have beautiful stones in them that make your eyes sparkle like diamonds, buy them. Earring length isn’t everything. Go ahead and break the rules sometimes. Follow your heart and be true to yourself to find your own unique style.

  24. I have very large ear lobes. It’s hard to find earrings that work for this. What do you suggest?

    1. Hi Jorgina,
One thing with large ear lobes is that you don’t want to try to wear tiny earrings. This will just make your lobes seem larger. Instead, go with dangles or large hoops which will draw the eye down away from your ears.
      Cheers!
      Deborah

    1. Thanks, Sue! All the earrings are from Nordstrom, Macy’s Dillards, etc, but you can use them as a guide to other similar ones. Glad to hear this post was helpful!
