Biography

  • Blondie is a popular and successful American new wave and punk band formed in 1974, led by the talented vocal allure of Deborah Harry, the band hails from New York, New York, U.S.

Prior to the earliest incarnation of Blondie, singer Deborah Harry had performed in the folk-rock band the Wind in the Willows, and subsequently the new wave band Stilettoes. Guitarist Chris Stein also joined the Stilletoes, in 1973, however a year after, the pair parted ways and formed the group Angel and the Snake. The name lasted only until October 1974, after which Blondie was born, and the duo invited drummer Clem Burke and bass player Gary Valentine to join their ranks. Following regular and successful spells at the bars Max’s Kansas City and CBGB, the band caught the attention of Private Stock Records, who signed Blondie in 1976.

Blondie’s self-titled debut arrived the same year and although failing to be a great commercial success, highlighted the group’s early musical eclecticism, which is showcased on later albums. Due to this disappointment in 1977 Blondie bought back their contract with Private Stock and signed with Chrysalis Records. Following their song “In the Flesh” mistakenly appearing on the Australian TV show “Countdown”, Blondie earned a host of national exposure, and resulted in the single peaking at No. 1 in the country. A year later the group’s sophomore album “Plastic Letters” appeared, charting at No. 10 in the UK, No. 78 in the U.S., and No. 64 in Australia. The album spawned the singles “Kidnapper”, “Denis”, and “(I’m Always Touched by Your) Presence, Dear”, and marked Blondie’s critical and commercial breakthrough.

The album also marked the departure of Gary Valentine and arrival Franke Infante, who subsequently switched to guitar following the addition of bassist Nigel Harrison. Blondie’s third full-length “Parallel Lines”, produced by Mike Chapman, built on the success of it predecessor breaking the band to a worldwide audience. The album’s first two singles “Picture This” and “Hanging on the Telephone” both cemented the band’s new wave appeal, however it was the hit single “Heart of Glass” that proved them as a cut above their peers. The single topped the charts in both the UK and the U.S., earning the alluring Debbie Harry celebrity status.

Known for combining the sounds of punk, garage rock, British Invasion rock, disco, and hip-hop, the band’s fourth full-length “Eat to the Beat”, topped the UK charts with their stylistic mash, although failed reproduce that success in the U.S. Released in October 1979, the record spawned the singles “Dreaming”, “Union City Blue”, and the UK No. 1 “Atomic”, after which Harry collaborated with disco producer Giorgio Moroder. The result of the collaboration was the highly successful disco smash single “Call Me”, which became Blondie’s second chart topper in both the UK and U.S. Blondie’s fifth full-length “Autoamerican” arrived in November 1980, led by the trans-atlantic No. 1 “The Tide is High”.

The album “The Hunter” followed in May 1982 spawning the singles “Island of Lost Souls” and “War Child” however didn’t prove as successful as its predecessor. The same year, with Stein suffering from the genetic disease pemphigus, Blondie disbanded until 1998. With a lineup consisting of Harry, Stein, Destri, and Burke, Blondie toured for the first time in 16 years, and in the process released a host of previously unreleased material.

Live reviews

  • Blondie

After all these years Blondie still has it in them. Lead singer, Debbie Harry, and guitarist, Chris Stein, are still the driving force behind this band that have garnered a legendary status with their creative songwriting and energetic performances.

Blondie first began to gain recognition for their performances in the 70’s playing gigs at notable venues in New York including CBGB and Max’s Kansas City, which were important foundations for starting the American punk scene. There is never a dull moment at a Blondie concert due to the wide and diverse catalog of classic hits that the band performs ranging from the various styles of punk, rock, pop, disco, reggae, and even rap, which can be conveyed from the groundbreaking hit, “Rapture”. There is no doubt that Blondie is a well established and critically acclaimed band already having sold over 40 million records and rightfully having been inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

At a Blondie concert the band’s primary goal seems to be to make sure the audience is having a fun time. Debbie Harry's stage presence is very light hearted and carefree often dancing to the rhythm of the beats and flirtatiously teasing the audience. The stage presence of the band as a whole is also very cool and suave sporting a retro trend of fashion. The recent addition of guitarist, Tommy Kessler, is a valuable asset to the band as he brings a youthful energy to the performance with his enthusiastic behind the back guitar solos that roar with gusto. The band’s current setlist is ensured to keep the audience pleased containing numerous hit songs as well as several from the band’s newest release, Ghosts of Download. Blondie is a band that always seems to be evolving their sound while still managing to stick to their fundamental roots. To see this progression and revisions of old songs unfold on stage live is a delightful treat that will leave the audience with a smile on their face.

  • American pop/rock outfit Blondie are nothing short of iconic, they were a staple appearance on the charts during the 70s and 80s and fronted by Debbie Harry they found success globally. It is now almost 40 years since the release of the debut eponymous album yet the group still knows how to conduct a live show.

The songs are unarguably classic and 'One Way Or Another' kicks the show off in a suitably angsty manner. The lyrics still seem as timeless and although Debbie's vocal is not what it was, she is supported by a thousand strong choir of fans which helps the whole operation. They have a huge amount of hits that they manage to work into a pacy, concise set which manages to entertain the whole audience as everybody has a different personal favourite. 'Sunday Girl' sounds perfect in the sunny festival settings whilst 'Atomic' evokes huge singalong of that confusing chorus 'oh, your hair is beautiful'. They save 'Heart Of Glass' for a wonderfully nostalgic finale and although Debbie Harry's voice does not carry like it once did, you cannot falter the passion Blondie still have for performing and entertaining the crowds.

  • Blondie, formed of musical icon Deborah Harry and her brilliant band mates, is an absolute musical legend. Watching Deborah’s alluring and unique vocals live was an incredible performance and a once in a lifetime experience. Blondie’s lead guitarist Chris Stein was as incredible as ever and, along with the amazing Deborah Harry, the two drove the band to incredible heights that night. The atmosphere both on stage and in the crowd was electric all night, Blondie was fun and Deb Harry was flirty and confident on stage, having fun and laughing and dancing as she performed. All their greatest hits were performed, to the crowd’s pleasure. Blondie mixed their most iconic hits with songs from their latest album ‘Ghosts of Download’. Blondie opened the show with the rager ‘One Way or Another’, which had the audience bouncing up and down from the get go. The band rocked out on stage to the classic, following it with tune after tune. ‘Sunday Girl’, ‘Call Me’ and ‘The Tide is High’ were just some of the songs that followed. Blondie left biggest hit ‘Heart of Glass’ to the finale, to great success.

  • Garbage opened for Blondie and they were great!

Unfortunately, Blondie was not. I've never left a concert early but I did this one. First, Debbie Harry came out in some headdress that looked like a bee (yellow and black). I believe she was fund raising to save the bees, and a cape that said "stop f____ing the planet. I just came to hear her sing....Then when the band was so loud you couldn't hear her and she made up words to songs, I knew it was time for her to retire. Very disappointed. I know she's now 72, but that's not old. Back in the day she was awesome. However, I am still a fan.

  • Wow!

Simply stunning "Mustang" were supporting Blondie. The French band really got the place rocking out to their surf Blues Rock.

Odd pairing but totally worked. The music spoke in volume and made up for the language barrier.

    As for Blondie, Simply amazing.

Mix of new and old songs even a cover of Beastie Boys "Fight for the Right".

Younger band members injected great live stage presence that Blondie in the 80s would have done themselves.

So Glad I saw them live. A great experience.

  • Outstanding gig. How Debbie Harry looks so cool and moves so effortlessly is incredible. Clem Burke captivated as usual - he is not only a fantastic drummer but visually stunning - in that you can’t help but just watch him! Chris Stein is as enigmatic as ever and appears to have stopped ageing. All 3 supported my musicians of quality and great talent.

The graphics behind the band were fitting and the banter Debbie has with the audience is just lovely.

    Loved it. Blondie still rock!

  • Amazing and Fabulous. They sang newer songs in addition to big hits 'Atomic, 'Heart of Glass', 'Maria', 'One way or Another' and 'Call Me'.

You would never think Debbie is 72, she looks young for her age and her wonderful voice is pretty much the same which makes you wonder she could go still be rockin in 10 years time. They were not late on stage which shows how professional they are.

Any true Blondie fan will have a brilliant time. Best £60 quid i spent.

  • Lovely show. Really enjoyed it. The faces of the three originals of "Blondie", Clem Burke, Chris Stein, and of course Debbie Harry, may show their age but certainly didn't affect their performance. Clem delivered some powerful drum solos, as good as or better than many I've heard from younger groups. And Debbie Harry...hearing her sing...I could close my eyes and be transported back in time. Great show.

  • The performance by Blondie was amazing as always. The band packs a tremendous amount of entertainment into their concerts. Debbie's voice and sound is still incredible after all these years and the guys are second to no other performers. I attend every Blondie concert that I can and highly recommend that others do the same as you will not find any other band like them.
