(Hystrix brachyura)

East Asian Porcupine (Hystrix brachyura)

Where to spot: Scrubby and open areas close to the forest on our hillside (more often, the musky scent of the porcupine can be detected near dens on the hillside)

The East Asian Porcupine is a large rodent with black and white quills. It will erect its long quills and rattle them to scare off its enemies by making itself look twice as large, if threatened.

Family groups (up to 4 individuals) can be spotted at this time of the year, but being nocturnal, they are usually seen at night.
