"I really, really wanted to enjoy this historic hotel more than I did. Everything was adequate, however, it feels neglected...I wish the Hotel Europe Group would put forth more effort in restoring/maintaining this landmark hotel. The gentleman who runs the breakfast service and the gentleman who works evenings in the restaurant were both lovely individuals - the rest of the staff seems to be both surprised and annoyed by any interaction with guests. Discovering Sarajevo: Fun Facts and Reasons to Visit

Sarajevo is the capital city of Bosnia and Herzegovina, located in the Balkans. The city is a fascinating mix of cultures, with a rich history that dates back to the Ottoman Empire. In fact, Sarajevo is often referred to as the “Jerusalem of Europe” because of its diverse population and religious heritage. One of the most interesting things about Sarajevo is that it is the only city in the world where you can find a mosque, a synagogue, a Catholic church, and an Orthodox church all within a few hundred meters of each other. Sarajevo is also famous for being the site of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria in 1914, which triggered the start of World War I. Today, visitors can explore the historic Latin Bridge, where the assassination took place, and learn more about the events that led up to the war. But Sarajevo isn't just a city with a rich history. It's also a vibrant and modern city with plenty of reasons to visit. For one, the city is surrounded by breathtaking mountains, making it a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Visitors can hike, bike, or ski in the nearby mountains, or simply take in the stunning views. Another reason to visit Sarajevo is the food. Bosnian cuisine is a delicious mix of Turkish, Mediterranean, and Balkan influences, with plenty of grilled meats, fresh vegetables, and hearty stews. Some must-try dishes include cevapi (grilled meat sausages), burek (a savory pastry filled with meat or cheese), and klepe (a type of Bosnian dumpling).

Getting to Sarajevo: Tips and Tricks for Travelers

Finally, visitors can also take the local bus, which is the cheapest option but can be a bit confusing for first-time visitors. Once you're in Sarajevo, getting around is also relatively easy. The city has a good public transportation system, with trams and buses running throughout the city. Taxis are also plentiful and relatively inexpensive, although it's always a good idea to negotiate the fare before getting in.
