Product Description
As the 'body count' genre stabbed its way into audiences' hearts in the early '80s, EuroTrash auteur Jess Franco (Sadomania, Mansion of the Living Dead) was asked to create his own saga of slaughtered schoolgirls complete with gratuitous nudity, graphic violence, and gory set pieces But just when you thought you'd seen it all, Franco shocked the world by delivering surprising style, genuine suspense and a cavalcade of depravity that includes incest, voyeurism and roller disco. The luscious Olivia Pascal of 'Vanessa' fame stars in this twisted thriller that was once banned in Britain yet is now presented uncut and uncensored - including the the complete 'stone mill power saw' sequence. Special features include the featurette on director Jess Franco 'Franco Moon' and the original theatrical trailer.

Despite being pretty incoherent and featuring many random elements, such as a small boy trying to sell holiday souvenirs in the middle of the night, Bloody Moon is vastly enjoyable trash of the highest order. It's not as deliriously over the top as Pieces, but there are some fairly nifty kills, a healthy dose of sleaze, some good old disco dancing and even the occasional flash of real style. The Severin disc is uncut, has a crisp picture quality and is region (0). There are no language options. The extras are the original theatrical trailer and an interview with Jess Franco.
The Franco Moon interview is almost worth the purchase price alone. The irascible auteur is a hoot, whether fiddling with his cigarettes, swearing about the film's humourless German producers and the lack of his promised Pink Floyd soundtrack or just fidgeting in his chair.
I recommend Bloody Moon to collectors of the original video nasties, Jess Franco fans and slasher lovers.
The plot is quite simple, a school for girls (in 70s and 80s clothing style) learning Spanish are being murdered. The killings will appease those wondering if Tony Hart's Morph went on a killing spree using the material that he was made from. How this was a video nasty is clearly an issue that I should have ignored during this censorship period. I was hunting them all down on pirate videos in Manchester and I was rarely impressed. This film escaped me at the time so my copy is now available on ebay at a third of the price, please don't bother.
The film is not set in an old spooky house but what was probably a Mediterranean hotel they hired, complete with a swimming pool & tennis court. It's supposed to be a large family home owned by an old bed ridden lady which has been converted into a language school run by her daughter/ granddaughter, can't remember which. Bizzarely the only students who want to learn a new language are all nubile young ladies ripe for the slaughter. There a few blokes to interest these students including the head teacher, a tennis coach, a gardener & the inevitable dodgy one with what looks like plasticine stuck to the side of his face. Yes you've guessed it, one by one they get the chop including the infamous scene at the quarry with the circular saw which seems to be thrown in at random purely for shock value. By the way this girl is the most stupid of all of them allowing herself to be tied to a slab of rock by a bloke with a mask on that she's only just met thinking it's a kinky game!!
The acting is really poor, probably made worse by the awful dialogue. The dubbed voice over actors do their best but they're on a sticky wicket from the start. However the main reason for this film failing to scare is the setting. A sunny Mediterranean resort with yachts in the harbour & palm trees in abundance just doesn't work.
Having said all that the picture & sound quality are pretty good but frankly who cares.
