Editorial Reviews

Recorded at the House of Blues in Los Angeles at the launch for the power pop label, Smile Records and the band's last studio album on Sept. 25, 2001. I've at the House of Blues captures a 70-minute set bristling with urgency and undeniable hooks. In his liner notes, Smile Records President Tony Valenziano writes, "I was happy and thankful we got to do that night just two weeks after we had been attacked. The event shaped all of us in different ways but all these years later I can still recall, especially when I listen to the concert, how that night buzzed - not just for the show that was being put on, but more because we were all in accord about being strong and united... we were all in this together." Live at the House of Blues features The Knack's founding trio of Fieger, Averre, and bassist Prescott Niles, alongside drummer Dave Henderson. Henderson also appears on the band's Normal as the Next Guy and Live from the Rock N Roll Fun House albums.

Fabulous, tight live performance from the Knack just two weeks after 9/11. Recording sounds clear and well mixed. Doug's vocals sound as great as ever, Berton's leads are spectacular and his guitar tones are heavenly, Prescott is lively and exciting (his live tone is too hid-mid for my tastes) and Dave ("Holmes Jones") is excellent replicating the great Bruce Gary beats. This is a no-brainer addition to all Knack fans' collections.

NOTE: The CD and vinyl list 18 songs, but does feature the entire 20 song set from the night.
-unlisted track Hold On Tight And Don't Let Go appears between The Monkey And Me and Seven Days In Heaven
-unlisted final encore song Havin' A Rave Up appears after Last Train To Clarksville

The Knack is one of my favorite bands. I was ecstatic to see this live recording released. It's a great sample of their work, although it does slight their third album, Round Trip, which rivals their debut album, Get The Knack, for their best work. My only knock on this live album is the recording quality. The lead singer is dominant in the mix; it's difficult to hear the instruments and backing vocals (on some tracks, it's the harmony and backing vocals that make the song) and at times it sounds like it was recorded in a steel can. That is why I give it only 4 stars.

I've been a huge Knack fan since "Get The Knack" came out in the late 70s. I have every Knack studio album/CD and still listen to them all to this day. While "Zoom" is a bit weak, "Round Trip" is criminally underrated. "Live at The House of Blues" is a bit too heavy on material from "Normal Like The Next Guy" (understandable since the album had just been released) but the spectacular covers more than make up for it, especially the wicked "Tequila/Break On Through (To The Other Side)". This is simply a truly great live album...

It’s a shame the Knack was overshadowed by the monster hit that was My Sharona. After the initial hype wore off the critics turned against the band because they were no longer “ the next big thing” and not the next Beatles. As if anyone could be the next Beatles! Unfortunately Doug and their management didn’t help the situation by refusing interviews and having a crappy attitude towards the press. By the time the Knack reformed and started making good, important records again the press and the rest of the world had passed them by. More’s the pity, because as good as their later records were, their live concerts were even better. The band was always extremely tight on stage, but after reforming they played as if they had something to prove. A case in point is this show: taped a mere 2 weeks after the horror of 9/11, many bands might’ve just mailed in a performance. Not the Knack; this is as tight and fun as any show they were doing. Losing both Bruce Gary first, and then Doug Fieger was devastating, but at least we have live snapshots like this of the band that prove time and again how good they really were. So, go Get The Knack!
